I just got in my confirmation email with login and password. LOL $16 and I can now download legit copies of XP Pro, Vista, Win7, etc and get a legit serial with each.

Here's the original thread. You may want to try this out too. If you do, choose a college near you, say you are in graduate school, and have your graduation date as 2013 or so. That's what I put in and it accepted my application! You should get an email soon after applying and an email with your login details a few days after applying.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

If you are a student in some course that is related to the IEEE (such as Engineering, IT, Science) then you can join their student membership (~$16 for 1/2 year, ~$30 for full year) and have free access to Microsoft educational alliance software.

http://www.ieee.org/web/membership/students/branchresources/micr...>

I just checked in and Windows 7 Pro (both 32 bit and 64 bit ) RELEASE TO MANUFACTURING versions (i.e. final versions) are available RIGHT NOW without delay (!) for you to download (this is ahead of general retail release).

There are also the beta and release candidate versions there too, avoid them as they will stop working at some point next year.

Remember you get to download one of each, each with a unique serial number.

You add to cart (free), get a serial number then download a small ~400kb program that manages the download. I am downloading right now, so can't verify the type of download, but should be good, previously things like XP were ISO images so pretty straight forward to use.

Warning - the serial numbers may only work once, so do yourself a favor and image your install using the built in Microsoft system wide image/back-up to an external drive for safekeeping.

Edit:
Those who jumped on the IEEE membership offer a while ago can download today if they did out their login details and the website from that confirmation email they got after joining.

Anyone joining for new will probably have to wait a few days for IEEE membership confirmation then another 7-10 for the academic software registration info.

Downloads are ISO images.

I tried Windows 7 Pro RTM (32bit) - it installed and activated just fine. Imaged the install to an external hard drive using the built in system image facility.

On the software drop down list you are looking for

* Windows 7 Professional (x64) - DVD (English)
Windows 7 Professional (x86) - DVD (English)

Avoid anything with "RC" or "Beta" in the description.

Also worth downloading several copies of Windows XP now before they are discontinued. Handy to use on an old pc or in a virtual PC set-up.

My school had one of those websites, but there wasn't a subscription like you get a list of software where it's listed as free or 1 to 5 dollars. Windows XP was 1 dollar, i bought and downloaded a couple :D
