What's the best/better N64 emulator out now?

Well sadly it's still Project 64 after all these years. Nemu choked out, and 1964 kind of flat lined. The problem is the best of the best is again Project64 v1.7 beta some number like .41 or something. The problem is you got to pay $20 to get into the beta, or if you know of a place to find it you can find ripped off copies on the web. I haven't found it myself yet where I'd trust the file not to rape my computer.

The true 1.7 can run a good deal of shit other (all) can not do at all or do pretty damn poorly. The best bet if you can't find that private beta is 1.6 but then go fuck around and find some more upgraded audio/video plugins as people support those privately.

I was amused the other day. I shoved PJ 1.6 on my ultra portable notebook, and it ran games perfectly which was nice. I guess having a real ATI card in this thing paid off, that and since it doesn't use over DX7 (DX9 kills me due to the lighting, slams the FPS hard.) I just put for fun Mario64 and WaveRace on here and they're cool.

I've been trying out MESS's support for N64 and it's at about ~50% speed on my Q6600 @ 3.2ghz and there are some minor graphical glitches. However, given the work going into it, it will probably be the most accurate N64 emulator in a relatively short time unless another contender appears. But it seems like the fascination with N64 emulation has waned, so I doubt it.

I also have to say that I have Project64 1.6 on my 1.2ghz Via C7-M/UniChrome II Pro GPU netbook. It's pretty crap, but amazingly does run Mario 64 playably. Project64 is a good emu, but I like accuracy over enhanced graphics so I'm still holding out hope that MESS's N64 emulation will one day be playable :-D

Oh I like accuracy too, to a point. It gets a bit much pointless and ridiculous if some of the better hardware on the market can't run the sucker respectably as yours can't at 50%. What I left off is that this thing is using an AMD Neo64 NV-20 chipset, it's no powerhouse, and that's why I was marveling it running so tightly.

I can only hope someone can find an airtight valid copy of 1.7 and get it out there to people. It's still in development, but too too slowly, so it's mostly like they're just trying to collect from suckers their $20.

You the man, hahaha. It should be fun to compare the two.

Recently I've been moving back towards trying out N64 games again, it's a good blast to the past, the 'NES' of the 3D era.

I hear some future PS3 firmware update will require PS3 gamers to forfeit their nuts as its considered a security risk to Sony!

I hear Apple users have to give up their spine and brain when they buy Apple products as they aren't needed to use Apple products, all you need is a soon to be empty wallet and a nearly overloaded credit card!

I didn't get much time to compare the older version with this "latest", but there are at least 2 games that never worked at all that are at least playable in this version, plus it's got support for high res. texture packs.
I'm interested in seeing Zelda OoT and Mario with nicer textures. The screenshots look mightt purdy.

All work and no play makes me..., well, you know the rest.

Version 1.7.0.49 seems to be the latest release. I found it searching 4chan /rs/.

From what I've read, 1.7.0.55 is a fake that contains a trojan.

Yes that is a viral or whatever type file, don't care to test it myself to see the fall out but all I've read says it's bad.

The .0.49 ver is the latest, but from what I've seen doing a cheap search using the filename I have here I see there are earlier releases where it's 0.49-Month-Year going into earlier 2009 and late 2008 too. I'm not so certain there is a newer release which would explain much considering they had their $20 scam offline for a very long time in 2009 and 10 (I hear it's up now) and little news of value out of their own forums for those with it (it's publicly viewable.)

I looked at PJ64 and I was guessing that it was the best one but I've also got Mupen and it seems to work good. I really wish the N64 would finally get solidly emulated and require no plug-ins, I just hate screwing with plug-ins.

Totally agree. It's ridiculous that a Nintendo system of all things that was pretty damn popular and had a good % of non-crap games has been handled so damn poorly. I remember back in the 90s when UltraHLE came out and people went apeshit, an then in earlier 00's until mid-decade some good work went into some solid emulation, but sadly via plugins. No one could or wanted to work together enough to make a solid program, and now that it's where things aren't documented well and are 'too hard' they just piss it off on the 'well if you do not like it make your own plugin' mentality which is crap. PJ64 with the private release in this thread gets a lot going, but certain games need to be swapped to a secondary video plugin to run nicely (like the goemon games) and that's mudlords rice video plugin 6.1.4. It's sickening really, he figured it out, yet Jabo and everyone since UltraHLE has never been able to get that game running higher than like 40% speed.

I think the fact people were pirating games on it while it was still being sold tainted the emulation scene a lot and made the scene look bad.

While I understand that downloading any ROM is copyright infringement, I don't see downloading ROMs for "dead" systems the same as downloading a game for a system that is still selling.

Again I know people will bring up the Wii's download section, and the many retro compilations, but I don't see them as the same thing, plus I tend to buy retro packs for systems I own.

I've also noticed the "arcade" games I own for the Wii have a few discrepancies between them and MAME. They're good, but not as good as "free" emulators.

Oh no you're right. Up until the halfassed HLE method of things with UltraHLE no system on the market was being actively and fairly well pirated until that point. GBC came along shortly after but had been generally avoided, but it's like it opened a floodgate as there was no reason existing PCs or GB emulators could not have been easily adapted to the color and added mhz cpu and ram, and they were fast.

PSX emulation came along a good little bit later and the argument can be made it helped too, and it was done as the system was 'active' but Sony refused to let it die up until 2000 or so, much of a technicality really as it was toast. I recall getting pretty damn hot about it on IRC, part of a good reason I separated myself from those thieving assholes over N64 ROM piracy. I had like in #oldwarez been an op in the hot emulation channel #emu and another, and I started dropping the ban hammer like mad as did a few others. Eventually we all got popped so the pussies with no conscience could get away with it. I always had a rule not to do it to a system that is in general service and hasn't been already replaced by better gear. I still mostly stick to that, but I will if I can emulate it try before I buy because I learned all too well that demos are bullshit that tend not to well represent final product and I don't like getting hosed on a $30-50 buy since asswipe stores refuse to take returns.
