1. Uninstall a driver (like the video driver) and reboot. See if you can get the problem to happen again. If yes, then try uninstalling another main driver and repeat.

2. With XP, if the hard drive failed to boot correctly a certain number of times, the UltraDMA mode 5 was turned off and PIO mode turned on as a fail safe. PIO mode is SSLLLOOOOOWWWW and sounds like what your prob might be. To fix, you either delete the hard drive drivers, or search Google for checking on and enabling UltraDMA for your hard drives.
