Yeah the system is surprising at times and Mario may be the best use of it yet. The suits you're thinking of are Super Mario Bros 3 based, the Tanooki suit came back (if I could fix my nick here I've been using Tanooki for like a decade now online), and the other is the Boomerang Suit (boomerang bros are smb3 baddies.) I'm not a fan of the 3 coins shit as it's annoying as it's used to unlock stages -- in the older games pre-DS they were used to rack points to a 1UP like in World. The 3D is actually needed in a few spots of the game as it does this pivot motion thing where you see depth to know how to jump to where to get a good thing like those coins.

Not sure why you felt the need to hold the system 10-12 inches from your face to have it work, you can go a good bit farther away and be fine. You can also slide that bar to change the intensity of the 3D which helps depending how your eyes work.
