The northern carbine is one of the main rifles for the south just to make the game more playable (no ingame explanation for it), while the crummy single shot rifles occupy a large chunk of the union missions. There's a surprising amount of standing around and reloading, especially for the NPCs and enemies. It's pretty bad from a playability standpoint, and missions that mix it up by trying to involve stealth or stationary weaponry are every bit as broken as you could imagine them being in a game like this.
Need to get around to playing the sequel, but I've been tied up with Medal of Honor: Rising Sun (which sucks every bit as much, if not more).
