Hey guys,

I'd like to put together a good MAME setup to play good stuff from 80's and 90's (just classic ROM stuff, no disc images or anything). Last time I had a comprehensive MAME romset was for a stable version was v0.36, that's ages ago!

Not asking for ROMZ of course, but what's your suggestion for a stable Win7-x64 MAME build, with a simple UI (frontends are ok if little config is needed), XBox360 controller support, no bloat (no need for h4xx0rz gfx filters)?

Your suggestions appreciated.

I haven't done a dedicated build in a while, but the "basic" MAME already has a small UI to switch games and should handle any DirectX input from the PC.
I find frontend/UIs are more for "curated" romsets where you handpick the ones you want to present... some are really nice but it is work to set them up.

As for versions, I pick one mathcing whichever romset I have. Archive.org posted a full 0.151 set (and it's still up) so that's what I went for last time I tried.

Thanks, had no idea that plain vanilla MAME now has a UI, I guess pure emulation zealots are growing older :)

Will give it a try next weekend.

That's what I used to get myself a jumpstart on bringing my set up to date. I also grabbed their CHDs, but I totally regret wasting my time because there was still a lot of work that needed to be done to each one and it's not like many of them are even worth keeping around and playing at the moment. Maybe in a decade.

I'm happy to see that the latest version of RetroPie is using a slightly newer version of AdvanceMAME, but I really wish they would just make a concentrated effort of maintaining ROM parity with the current PC builds.

Yeah, getting the right romsets for non-PCs is a major pain in the butt.

How's MAME on the RPI? I've just got the new version 2 (which is much better for desktop) but didn't try any emulators for it yet.
