SubjectWinUAE + AGA help new Reply to this message
Posted byIron Man

Im kinda new to UAE (as i still own a real A1200) but the handling of the disks and the accuracy was of some interest.

I tried to run some AGA demos

  • Tractorbeam (1996)(Black Lotus)
  • Suicide (1997)(Oxyron)

But they run very choppy, even if the counter says 50FPS. Something with the sync of the monitor or something else? Or is my XP2100 simply not powerful enough to handle that... I tried various settings with no luck. Any suggestions?

So long...

Either i'm too impatient to wait, or i couldnt get Tractorbeam to work (i'll try again in a bit), but Suicide seems to work okay with some tweaking. I'm using an A1200 esque setup, on WinUAE 0.8.21 R4 as follows:

Chipset:
AGA (PAL)
Fast Copper
Collision Level: Sprites Only

Sound:
Enabled, 100% Accurate
22050Hz
Mono
Buffer size 1
Lag Compensation 0.0%
Interpolation Disabled

Ram:
8MB Chip

CPU:
Type : 68EC020
CPU Emulation Speed: Fastest Possible, but maintain chipset timing

Display:
800x600x16bit Windowed

ROM:
Kickstart 3.1

The rest of the settings shouldnt have much impact (things like floppy setups and hard drives)

Your CPU should have the grunt required, my P4 2GHz handles it fine.

Hope this helps.

And yes, i am a Commodore fan.

-Edit- I can get Tractorbeam running fine with the above settings now :) Guess i was just impatient to let it start.

Pete

Hmmm... I tried your settings in the lates UAE relase with no luck. Maybe a bug in the latest build?

I can run both demos on my real machine but only a frameshow on the emulator. I recoredet an avi - has all (i repeat) all frames. Ungh?

So simply either the full screen nor the windowed output displaying all of the frames. Maybe the frameskip is hard set to xxx in this version?

So I called a friend, also a big Amiga lover to help out on this on his Athlon TB1400 - all the same (only noticeable diff besides speed is he runs 2k im on 98SE).

...and yes, patience is important for Tractorbeam, or it wont start :o)

Seems the latest version is damned slow, i get the same chuggyness as you do.

All i can say is try an older version if you can get hold of one.

Thank you! Ill try your version then.
Strange isnt it, that there was such a big speed hit? I mean we dont talk about Aarons latest Mame drivers here *lol*.
More like the Toaplan2 stuff in Mame, dont even runs full speed on 2GHz :)

Is there a way to get a real 4:3 picture of the screen? not a strange placed one like on the default settings? Or must i use the OGL stuff for this (besides that i could abuse my monitor)?

...and btw - works with your version now like it should :)

I was never able to get the screen centered correctly using the basic display settings. Now I get full-screen with *nice* scanlines using OpenGL. I'm not sure how closely this matches a real Amiga, but I'm pretty picky, and it looks quite nice. Didn't know what I was missing all this time. It's worth the effort to explore OpenGL if your video card supports it.

Thanks again, tried this here and looks like it should be - OS 3.5 is up and running (faund something on this somewhere in a UAE FAQ).

Now if i only could get a higher res under 3.5 - but else its nice and now i can watch some demos (my original machine has only a 40meg HD so i had to clean all after i installed a HD demo *lol* - much better now here with gigs of free space.)
