If this post are going to make any senct to you at all I have to start from the begining.

For some time ago my longlifed scsi-CDrom died.
I didnīt have the heart to throw it away.
Shortly after this perfect idea was formed inside my head.
Why not use it for something cool.

Before I used to put the audio from the computer through my stereo so I could both listen and record the sound to tapes. Yes, tapes, my carstereo canīt handle CDs.

The ide was to crack open my old tape-walkman (that has recording funktion) and merge/rebuild it with the corpse of my old CDrom.

I would only use the case and "open tray" function on the CDrom, everything else was to be take out. Then I would gut my walkman and fit it on the tray. Then I would have a "openeble" cassette player/recorder in my computer.

The contructions is quite simple.
I will take the sound output from the gutted walkman and feed it into the linein on the soundcard. Then I will take the lineout from the soundcard and solder it where the mic would be on the walkman. Then I would figure out how to acces the "open tray" funktion without using the device as a CDrom.

Then another idea was formed.
What if I could use this device for something else than just play and record sound with. The C64 and other early computer did store information on regular cassettetapes.
So it has been done before.

The question is:
Does anyone know of an interface used to store data on tape with a computer using a regular taperecorder?

Years ago when there were no banners on Internet, I used to find all kind of weird pages regarding McGyver-like hardware tamperings.

IIRC, there was a page explaining how to make backups on videotapes by connecting your VCR to the PC (don't ask how).

Another one (closer to what you are searching for), was using the C64 tape unit (was it called C20? 1531? can't remember), possibly via COM or LPT, for the same purpose.

Don't ask about the URLs, my bookmarks got lost the day I trusted a 1.44 floppy disk to store them. Nevermind, they say mistakes make you wiser.

Good luck.

Thatīs exacly what Iīm talking about.
The things you build donīt nessesary need to be useful.
Bus as long as theyīre cool and do SOMETHING.

Iīll continue my search for a "dat tape cassette interface"-something.
