Actually in Japan is was illegal to rent videogames for the longest time because companies like Nintendo were bitching that they were loosing revenue because of it. They never convinced the US to pass such a law but game rentals were definately against the law at one point in time in Japan. So as far as your comment above goes companies like Blockbuster do in fact rent games even though Nintendo definately doesn't approve of it
