Has anyone else that owns a new style nes noticed that it seems to put lines on most games ? Not too distracting but is none the less.

Yep, mine does that too. Don't know of anyway to fix it.

Where are the lines that it adds? I'll take a look at mine and try to compare.

They are not really that noticeable and sometimes they come and go. The lines seem to be the most noticeable with RBI Baseball. Try testing your system with this game. Maybe your doesn't have this problem.

SubjectFigures, it was a Tengen game.... new Reply to this message

remember, Tengen didn't get the ok for any of their games, they'd just produce crap title after crap title. Who could forget Gauntlet how it would give you fake passwords. But anyways, its cause Tengen wasn't a licensed Nintendo developer, that would explain those ugly assed black carts they had. I imagine anything by Color Dreams and other non-licensed games to have the same affect.

I came to kick ass and chew bubblegum, and I'm all out of bubble gum.

Actually, Tengen made games for Nintendo just like any other developer at first, their games were regular grey ones like all the rest. Then Tengen started making their own carts, and those are the black ones. Besides, the dark lines aren't from the game, it's because the new style NES uses a NES-on-a-chip, which is of lower quality than having every chip seperate like a regular Famicom or NES.

It might have been that Tengen did NOT license Nintendo coding libraries, instead they used their own. They probably reverse engineered an NES somewhat (the original version). So, when Nintendo changed their NES hardware, tengens code might not have full compatibilty with the new chipset.

Actually, Nintendo manufactured all NES cartridges themselves, both first-party and third-party. Third-Party developers submitted the game program to Nintendo, who then burned it onto ROMs, adding the appropriate Mapper chipset the developer specified.

This was all a part of the license agreement and Nintendo's "Seal of Quality". (The Seal was meant to indicate that Nintendo can confirm the game/peripheral works, because they manufactured it or tested it.)

Eventually, some third-party companies grew tired of this (or were unable to pay the licensing fee) and made their own carts. They couldn't outright mimic the patented design of Nintendo's cartridges, so they came up with their own creative shapes.

Between Atari arcade ports, Namco arcade ports, and Sega arcade ports, Tengen was one of the best NES 3rd party devs. Either your memory is failing you or you started playing videogames post-NES and as such have miserable tastes.
