1997-Present and ...still broke. DOS one was the only unit to have proper CDROM function.

CDs read now fine and all that, but the audio stops and stays off more than it's on. On sounds nice, but not at a good 1:4 ratio. That and it seems to hate USB pads, refuses to detect button presses, but does allow you to config it. Go figure.

Pay doesn't always mean better.

Umm, I've been using Magic Engine since the DOS days myself, registered and all. I have been using v99b5 up until today, and NEVER had the CD-rom problems you speak of. Perhaps the only reason the DOS version is working for you is because your old DOS machine cannot handle the load of the Win32 version? Also, my pads are USB as well, and I have no problems there either. I think you should check your system before accusing the emulator to be "broken".

Wow...me too well before the Win/Mac ports saw any reality.

My system is fine, as was the last before it using this program. I've had various OS's (98, 98se and XP), tried many different CDROM drives and now even my DVD drive. The CD for me has always either skipped, had no audio, or for a long period just would give a read error not wanting to even see a CD in the drive. So in that respect it is improving. And this is NOT an old DOS machine, I could run DOSBOX I suppose, but it's XP Pro on here now. As for USB pads, tried it with the gravis gamepad pro, n64 w/adaptoid hookup, gravis eliminator, ms sidewinder. Always has been touchy.

Guess I should have listed all the stuff that's failed and why so people like you didn't feel like they need to come off the mountain to bitch like an uninformed newb eh?

Have you tried looking to see if DMA is still enabled on your CD/DVD drive? Certain versions of ME required you to have an Adaptec ASPI layer (v4.60) installed to use your CD-Rom drive, did you look into that? If you have more than one CD drive you would have to select the one you will be using with the emulator in the PCE.INI, if that was the case, did you do this when you previously had tested "many drives"? When all else failed, did you try dumping your game to bin/cue format, mounting it with a tool such as Daemon Tools or Alcohol, and running the game directly from a virtual CD drive? As for the USB pad, I too have a USB Sidewinder, and it works fine, so I'm not sure what the problem is there. If there actually is a problem, remember it is a preview release afterall. That problem certainly did NOT exist in v99b5, as I play the games with this version and my sidewinder all the time. You can always use JoyToKey to fix that problem anyway.

I have tried everything but doing bin/cue, and don't feel that I should have to to have it do what I paid for... same with joy2key. They're options, I just don't want to use those 2. I don't have the sidewinder or exterminator anymore, was speaking of older versions. The other two I do have, I can select what buttons do what and all, even the gravis has it's own artwork in the gui...just doesn't register in game.

I've already erased it...I'll try again on the real ver but I kinda gave up on it years ago, even sold off most the remaining CDs I had and dumped a few of the cdrs too (DracX, Macross, etc.) I just holdout hoping one day it will work right for once and I can play Ys Book 1+2 and Gate of Thunder 4in1 CDs again.

No offense, VHD, but that sounds like a drive problem. Is this the same drive that you've had all along? Tried cleaning it, or burning a fresh copy of that CD? Tried swapping drives, in case the firmware isn't exactly "MagicEngine compliant"?

What system chipset/USB host chipset? I'm almost willing to bet it's Via. Have you had any problems with USB controllers in other games/emus/etc.?

Actually in this program I've used my pioneer dvd, a toshiba cd, and some mitsumi cd I think it was over the years. And they worked fine on everything else I've had. PR4 works fine for me by the way.

Actually it's not a VIA, I'd never buy that crap. The USB I got are 2.0 compliant. Also I've NEVER had an issue with anything USB before except for the program.

BTW it was the authors fault, he admitted it, and is still working on it. If you check the bug forum of his a ton of people are reporting problems. But again PR4 is working nice for most and seems k for me too.
