You're right, but that is way too much work IMHO.

It's possible to add 768x448@60Hz in the driver control panel (I just have) - MAME will use that and just double the resolution of the game natively. Even without scanlines, d3d and any of the other fancy stuff. And on the auto resolution setting too.

If it doesn't work because your monitor goes into standby, delete it and make it a 120Hz mode instead, or activate 'use double scan for low resolutions' (or something). 120Hz is much easier on the eye too. Mame will still auto pick it.
