SubjectIGS PGM -edit- new Reply to this message

Hey, let's talk about something else :(

So I was reading PGM.C today just to see what's going on in that neighborhood. Bummer that the different protection methods haven't been figured out 100% yet and that the hardware isn't really finished being emulated yet, but that was still a pretty enjoyable read and very informative.

Is PGM work a priority for any of the MAMEdevs or has it taken a backburner role because of all of the recent stuff (the Sega rewrite, the Crystal System driver from ElSemi, RB's M1, Ville's Model 3, etc)?

-edit-
given the recent reaction to Progear, I can't wait to see how people react to ESPGaluda and Dodonpachi Daioujou. Protip: credit feeding your way through a shmup is similar to playing through a Street Fighter game with an invincibility cheat. It takes no skill and is not fun.

For maximum fun, limit your continues to either 1 or 0. Force yourself to learn patterns, adapt to the gameplay style and scoring system, and actually TRY instead of credit feeding and bomb spamming.

I don't think Progear had anything to do with it.......stuff involving Raz just has a way of attracting alot of attention.

IMHO this kind of thing generally results in bad response to the game. Hoarding and then talking about it usually kills any interest in a game because it either can't live up to the hype that has been manufactured or everyone just gets bored with people who yank others chains to make up for the bad things in their lives.

Just out of curiousity, aside from the games that are already in Mame, are there any other PGM games of particular interest? Of coarse the Dodonpachi games are classics....but what else is good?

I looked up system16.com and was sad to see that several games don't have pictures yet.

Demon Front looks like an interesting Metal Slug Clone...how rare are these games in the wild anyhow?

Also found this.... lots of dead links though :(

Anyone have any more links with pictures or game details for some of the other obscure games on this system?

Dodonpachi II isn't up to par with the rest of the series from what I've heard. Daioujou is fantastic in just about every way (it's more of a remake of Dodonpachi than a whole new game), though.

Ketsui is of particular interest to most people, as it never got a home conversion. It's pretty much Dodonpachi on training wheels with helicoptors, but it's quite good.

ESPGaluda is a fantastic game as well, though a bit on the easy side. The PS2 version has an excellent arranged mode that ramps up the difficulty a good bit along with mixing up the characters, but since it'll never leave Japan most people will have to be happy with seeing it emulated at some point.

Demon Front looks pretty fun, but I've never played it.NFG has a nice page about it.

There's also Knights of Valour 2 and the many other spin offs. There's quite a few brawlers for the system.

yeah, IGS updated their site for the new year, removing the majority of their games and leaving only a couple of the latest PGM titles there, its probably a fair indication of which games they are still selling (and therefore we should avoid emulating)

Interest in PGM from the devs is fairly low because its still an active system (well maybe not anymore, gladiator may well be the last game but they still sell some from 2001+), also the protection changes per game and is rather nasty.

Played it once after clubbing one night at a galactic circus in Melbourne's Crown Casino, I remember looking at it and thinking its a Metal Slug clone it was unfuckingbelievable though! If its still there (haven't checked in a long long time) I'll be sure to take pics before being thrown out! lol

Watch the movies under "tips and tricks" on this page,

http://www.igs.com.tw/english/product/ettl/fm_tc.html

I think this game's pretty amazing. Its about time someone added another dimension to side-scrollers (i.e. sidescrollers with multiple moves and combos)! IGS knows how to make good games, thats for sure!

Thanks for the reach around, Haze. I'd never even heard of Gladiator before but after checking out the page it makes me a very sad panda that this stuff doesn't get better distribution 'round these parts
