Been messing around with a pacman emulator recently to see i I could replace the sprites with 3d.

Here are the results:
Pacifi3D 0.1

Unfortunately its on a geocities server so you may have difficulties getting to it.

Update: Now hosted at retrogames. link updated.

Your Geocities page is already down, so I mirrored the files on our news page. :)

Unfortunately I didn't get all the details on what roms to use etc. Maybe you can post here for people until you get better hosting for the project.

In fact, we can probably host it for you if you like. Just email admin (at) ztnet.com :)

wow. very very very cool. only thing I'd need is input support, so I could use my gamepad. other than that, it's cool as hell.

I remember something like this a couple years ago, but the link escapes me at the moment.

Tried it and liked it. Has potential. Good luck with this. It looks interesting.

Metroid Cubed was a wee bit similar (as were Voxel's other projects), but it seems like his page is gone. Too bad.

This emulator is pretty neat, i like it.

It should already accept input from the first joystick it finds attached to your system.
Of course if you wanted to use something other than that I have some more work to do.

Its nearly impossible to play the game in 1st person mode without refering to the minimap of the level. Maybe there could be some frames added for "turning" the corners and such to add some sense of direction. And yes, I realize this is just a technical experiment.

Otherwise, pretty sweet emu . :)

Yeah I know. The controls not rotating doesnt help either.
I was envisaging a tomb raider style camera as being better.

Both the camera and controls are on my todo list.

Completely awesome. It's not really something I ever considered. Pacman through his own eyes. :)

I just spent the best part of an hour looking for it on my hard drives!!!
and it was in my c:\temp folder!! bollocks...

anyway if anyone wants metroid_cubed I can email it to someone with some webspace if they want to host it.
Its a 3.5MB Shockwave file.

shoot it my way and i'll throw it up on roushimsx.com

As long as the email doesn't include the text "BIGGER PENIS" or "HELP ME MOVE MONEY", it should get through the spam filter.

Ace!
I wonder if it would be possible to do this with other tile based games, like Mr.Do, BombJack, Dig-Dug etc?
Or if it's possible to write a general case emulator which takes the tiles for all of these and makes them into 3D.

Very cool. Funny how if you add a bit of enhancement (a la Nebula transparency or PSX anti-aliasing) people go all up in arms about it, but when you go crazy all out enhancement everyone loves it ;-D
Personally I like both!

Donkey kong is another game that would be cool to have as 3d ( preferably using the mario 64 model ). If you could switch between first person, a couple of levels of over the shoulder and classic view then it would be perfect :-)

Another game that would be interesting is kung fu masters. A cinematic camera system that zooms in on people as they start to attack etc would be ubber cool.

Until then, there's always Congo Bongo :)

I did think about doing donkey kong, but pacman was going to be easier as all the models were nice and simple.

Yeah but you have to think whether 3d would do much for them . I think bombjack would be hard to see where you are going.

The more simple elements I already extrude to a fixed thickness. More compilcated ones could have a big lookup for tile number to model. These could be both quite generic. Though you still have the effort of generating all the models in the first place.

The only difficulty is in doing tricks with the camera. eg Ive made the maze movable but the information text stay in place. This is done by identifying which tiles should be fixed or movable. I suppose that could be made generic but is the effect something you would want on a different game.

Or the first person perspective mode. Here you need to identify the pacman sprite, its location and the direction its facing in (which is worked out through sprite numbers and whether it has been flipped). Making that generic would be much harder.

Nah it would do very little, I just thought it would look cool ;)

I always wanted to do (with playability intact)...
Steroscopic Out Run and After Burner, Power Drift etc...
Street Fighter 2 with proper 3D models viewed from any angle
Sonic 1 in 3D

Rolling Thunnder 2 in 3D would be cool as well wouldn't it? Ok I'm dreaming now
