SubjectChrono Trigger - which version? new Reply to this message

I haven't had a chance to play through all of Chrono Trigger yet, and I've heard about a bunch of remakes, so which is the best one? Are there only the SNes and PSX versions or are there more?

I'd stick with the original SNES version. It might not be as flawless as the PSX or some of the retranslations (was any of those ever finished).
There were two attempts to make 3D remakes but they both got shelved after Square make some legal threats, or that's what I have heard.

The original still got a much nicer feel to it in my opinion. It's just the way this game was played and loved when it was released. Just go for the original. It won't disappoint you.

The playstation version has some annoying slowdown and load times for whatever reason. The only reason to check it out would be to see the cutscenes.

Someone ripped all of the cutscenes, strung them together, and labeled it as a Chrono Trigger anime OVA. You can find it on whatever P2P network you frequent.

So besides the cutscenes, the PSX version has nothing extra? The music is the same and everything?

On the contrary, there are a few little extra tid-bits, such as an unlockable gallery as well as a sound test I believe... I haven't played with my copy much lately, so I can't remember all the extras. Gameplay wise however, yes, both the SNES and PSX versions are the same. The PSX version has some slightly annoying loading times when moving between different areas as well as getting into battles.

While I've only played the SNES version myself, there are SNES roms for the BS-X System that sound similar:

BS Chrono Trigger - Character Library (J)
BS Chrono Trigger - Jet Bike Special (J)
BS Chrono Trigger - Music Library (J)

So, being old school myself, I'd just play the snes version and hit up some of those BS "Special" versions if you want to see extras :-D

Hmm would these annoying load times still exist with ePSXe?

Personally, I think of the BS Music Library as kind of a useless novelty with SPC music around. It's like a nifty SNES-driven frontend, if you want ... a japanese one though. Nothing that a nice CT Winamp skin can't best.

The Jet Bike racing in Chorno Trigger isn't that great either. More like a try of Square to put some Mode 7 effect in the game because every RGP on the SNES used it at that time (worldmap anyone). Can't miss out on that, of course. Is the BS Jet Bike any different from the game's? New drivers, gameplay revised, more tracks/backgrounds? I never checked it out myself.

Now the Character gallery, that's something. Does the PSX version have it too and if so, was it translated. Anyway this is a great little ROM to see how much effort and detail Square poured into this game. 2D RPG at its prime.
