the bootlegs are unprotected anyway, it would have made no difference at all. at no point was the protection on the later games documented, people simply used bootlegs.
there is one cps2 game which wouldn't be included in Mame at this point, and I strongly suspect that even if the encryption was figured out emulating it would be impossible without extracting a large amount of data from the original boards like the fd1094, and if somebody can do that they could bootleg/emulate it anyway.
