SubjectAnybody remember some old videogame tv shows? new Reply to this message

Around 15 years ago or so, I remember there being a few videogame related tv shows. Gamepro had their own show where they did reviews, previews, and I think even had a mailbag. I vaguely remember a cartoon being a segment on the show too with a bunch of characters from Acclaim games (the knight from Wizards and Warriors, the Bigfoot monster truck(!), Tyrone from Arch Rivals, and some sort of tomatoe looking thing from a gameboy game I can't remember). Anybody have more info on that cartoon?

Then there was a sort of gameshow for kids, I think it was called Video Power. I rmember there being small teams (2-4 people) and you would have to buzz in and answer questions about games, identify what game a song was from, compete to get a high score, etc. The highlight was at the end, where the winner got to run through this huge obstacle course and grab all the games he could velcro to his body and reach the finish line. If he made it to the end before time ran out, he got to keep all the loot. I think they also hid a super prize in there, something like a Neo*Geo system I guess. I could have sworn I stumbled across a piece written by a contestant a few years ago detailing his experience on the show, but I can't for the life of me remember where I saw that.

These both would have been on in the late 80s/early 90s, but oddly enough I seem to recall GamePro TV airing in the mid-late 90s again.

Anybody come up with some other videogame shows?

Gamesworld was on Sky ... probably early nineties. There was a different theme each week-night (tips, reviews, a tournament, some stupid drama thing, and something else?). Bob Mills introduced the tournament, which was mainly based around Super Mario Bros 1 - 3 (I think). One of the female Gladiators was the Games Mistress (sex), and David Walliams played a gimp.
Gamesmaster was more well known. Channel 4, presented by Dominik Diamond (and later Dexter Fletcher, maybe someone else). Celebrity guests. A mixture of games tournaments, (crap) reviews, and cheats (Patrick Moore).
There was also something like "Baad" or "Buzz" with Voilet Berlin and Gaz Top on ITV.

The tomato was QUIRK, the show was the 'power team' which also had kuros from wizards and warriors.

Other shows I recall about gaming. Nick Arcade which had 16bit era games from SNES/GEN/TG16(occasionally), Sparcade which was mentioned, and as you said Gamepro.

Cartoon wise though I remember a shitload:
-Super Mario Super Show
-Super Mario 3
-Super Mario World
-Captain N the Gamemaster
-Legend of Zelda (ran friday on the Mario Super Show)
-Power Team (said it above)
-Pole Position
-PacMan
-Donkey Kong Jr
-Dragon's Lair
-Space Ace
-Q-Bert

I'm sure there is more but that bigass list will do to jog some of your memories. More or less almost everyone of those is from the 80s.

It's a whole channel dedicated to videogames... I don't watch it a lot (only catch re-runs) but it's made by gamers, so they have some pretty cool stuff. This what I've seen so far:

- Reviews/Previews.
- Roundtable interviews of game designers.
- "Behind the scenes" spotlight interviews of game development houses.
- Fighting game tournaments.

Then at night they have several anime shows (currently, Rahxephon at 9pm).

Maybe not the most pro thing ever, but they take themselves seriously and it's the most mature (as in, established and working - some antics the announcers pull can be moronic) gaming show I can think of.

There was Nick Arcade.
It had kids playing games against each other, and a sweet end match with the players against a blue screen where they replaced the game sprites.
