Wow and amazing! You are right.

Amazing how long Pac-Man has been around. That dude *IS* the original video gaming mascot next to Mario (Jumpman in Japan) and Donkey Kong which showed up less than a year later in 1981. Hard to believe all those 3 are on or pushing the 25 year anniversary mark.

Super Jumpman Bros huh?

Jumpman was in Donkey Kong in both USA and Japan.

Mario is a different character (although inspired by jumpman) that showed up in all games after Donkey Kong in both the USA and Japan.

Except, according to the site you linked to, Mario is just Jumpman renamed. Same character, new name.
"Miyamoto's next game, Donkey Kong Jr., starred 'Mario' for the first time, but was technically the character's second appearance in a game."

I always thought he was called Mario in the original Donkey Kong. I never heard of him being called Jumpman even back in the day.

That's because early DK machines as a test and stuff still had the Japanese plate art around the monitor saying Jumpman. Later ones (I've seen both cabs) have it say Mario. So I am right about this, it's just that Nintendo and that whole Mario Segali landlord homage thing is why Jumpman got a real name (since that dude looked like Jumpman.)
