SubjectSega Model One new Reply to this message

Whatever happened to Sega Model One emulation? I've been away from the emulator scene for a couple of years and knew there were problems emulating Sega's hardware back then. I was hoping these problems would have been solved by now. Is there any info about the current status of Model One emulation (Modeler, Smog). I still dream of having arcade Virtua Racing running on my PC. Maybe some smart programmer is about to make a breakthrough.

Also, does anyone have any info on the emulation of Sega's Super Monaco Grand Prix? Last I heard the encryption code was proving difficult to crack.

Many Thanks

Model 1 is supported by mame. The last time I tried them virtua fighter was playable with a few small graphical glitches and virtua racing ran but had some major camera issues.

Wow! Thanks.

I never thought I'd see MAME emulating Virtua Racing. This is impressive. It seems to run at full speed on my (3.2ghz) laptop. Do you know if the emulation utilizes any 3D hardware acceleration?

I see what you mean about the camera problems though. I hope the MAME guys can fix this soon.

Does anyone else out there have any info on Sega's Super Monaco Grand Prix?

No hardware acceleration in MAME. The current graphics are HLE, so bugs will probably be around forever until some kind of information shows up about the graphics DSP the system used.

Also supported by MAME(tm), due to Charles MacDonald's and Nicola's breaking the encryption on many of the Sega classics on system 16/18/24.
Actually nowadays its pretty hard to find games that MAME doesn't emulate in some form or another.

I was using a slightly older version of MAME that didn't have SMGP listed as a supported game. The latest version of MAME 32 (96) has no fewer than 8 different sets of the game. The rom I have runs on set 2. I was wondering if there are any advantages to the other sets (1 to 7 + Mega tech)?

Mega-Tech is a Megadrive/Genesis unit in an arcade machine, hence the game is the same as the Megadrive/Genesis version but currently isn't fully emulated (broken road layer last time I tried it).

The arcade versions are different revisions. The default "smgp" ROM is the most recent, however most of the more recent ones have the fake almost-real advertising hoardings changed and the McLaren on the start-up screens has its Marlboro logo/colour removed. If you check the other variants some have these original graphics still in place (basically Sega got in trouble and released updates to remove the almost-real content).
