Subjectpal (50hz) games on non-50hz monitor new Reply to this message

hi!

im currently having trouble using pal games in emulator such as zsnes and winuae.
as my monitor doesn't support 50hz resolutions, i use 100hz (+vsync) to play pal games. but actually it doesn't run as smooth as ntsc-games in one of the 60hz resolutions - especially with side-scrollers like super mario etc.
is there anything i can do about that - i mean is there a better solution for pal games than run them at 100hz?
... i hope so :-))

bye,
sadd

If you are using a CRT monitor and not LCD or Plasma, you can use a program called PowerStrip by EnTech to tweak any resolution your monitor supports to 50Hz or even interlace on the higher resolutions.

thx, this program really works, but 50hz is really really flickering!!!
any other idea to get non-flickering results and have smooth scrolling with pal games?

50Hz really does flicker that bad on a CRT PC monitor because its below the 60Hz mininum and the reason why you cant select 50Hz in Windows, Games and Emulators.

Switch off Vsync in the emulator and run your resolutions at 100Hz.

i just tried it in zsnes -> 640x480 DR, 100hz, noeffects, no vsync, no tripple buffering
it's quite smooth but still, side scrolling kind of blurs the screen. but it's still not near playing ntsc-games@60hz!

50Hz doesn't flicker too bad on my monitor though, slightly more flicker than 60Hz thats all.

What CRT monitor are you using?

I'm using a Sony GDM-FW900. I don't think all monitors handle low refresh rates as good as each other so the quality will vary from monitor to monitor.

Is there not a NTSC version of the game(s) you are playing in Zsnes?

i've got a cheap proview 19inch monitor (i think this brand doesn't even exist anymore ;-))
50hz is really bad on that thing - play more than 5 minutes and get a headache!!!

for snes games, using the ntsc-version is actually the best solution, i think.
but for amiga-emulation, most games are pal - switching to 60hz makes them smooth but speeds them up by about 16,66%! so i think i simply have to live with my problem... or i could buy a 10inch monitor so that 50hz isn't that bad ;-)))

Get a TV that supports PAL signals and use a card with video out (or see if you can find and old school VGA to RF/RCA/S-Video converter).

Well a smaller monitor won't mean less flicker but it will mean a smaller picture :D

My Sony monitor is a 24". It all depends on the circuitry of the monitor ie the electron beams and the screen etc.

I just checked my WinUAE setup and indeed I run it at 640x480 @ 50Hz and don't experience flickering that makes games unplayable like you mentioned.

Your either going to have to live with playing Amiga games at 100Hz (PAL) or invest in a new monitor, preferably one with a Sony FD Trinitron Tube ie Dell P1130/HP P1130 is the most common.

I get perfectly smooth video in WinUAE at 100Hz. And it's not 50% faster either :-)
