I understand that the DreamCast has the exact same hardware as the NAOMI hardware. Does that mean that it's possible to play all NAOMI games on the DreamCast? And what about the NAOMI 2 games?

I do have to wonder if proper emulation of NAOMI is going to lead to the DC warez scene being able to hack up NAOMI games so that they'll play on a DC. Nothing fancy like porting of course, just the slash and burn stuff to get it to work-- quarter-sizing all of the textures, patching out whatever protection exists, remapping inputs, and so forth.

Of course, I'll bet Atomiswave has more to fear from that than NAOMI.

NAOMI 2 of course doesn't look too likely because of the T&L chip on top of everything else.

even though NAOMI uses the exact same CPU and PowerVR graphics CHIPS as the Dreamcast, the NAOMI is not the same on the motherboard level. NAOMI has twice the system memory (32 MB SDRAM), twice the video memory (16 MB SDRAM) and I think, four times the audio memory (8 MB) as the Dreamcast. plus the NAOMI uses solid-state ROM-boards or cartridges for the games, which makes loading far faster than Dreamcast's GD-ROM optical disks.

It is totally impossible to run NAOMI games on Dreamcast.

as for NAOMI 2, it has a total of THREE chips dedicated to graphics: two PowerVR2DC chips for rendering, plus a T&L geometry co-processor called ELAN which is not in Dreamcast at all. on top of that, NAOMI 2 has even more memory than NAOMI. in fact NAOMI 2 has more memory than consumer PS2, Gamecube or even Xbox consoles.

Dreamcast and other cd/dvd-rom based systems stand as long as their drive can read the game's disc. Depending how often you play, it can fail after a couple of years and it's not always easy to replace them (if not impossible).

Of all the laser based system out there I'd give the GameCube the best score for toughness. I brought my second hand 3 year old (at the time) GC to a year long tour in Iraq, after 4 months the X-boxs and PS2s had to be taken apart almost weekly for cleaning because of the dust while my CG worked flawlessly. Draping the systems with sheets and towels, or putting them in boxes was also a common quick fix. Add on top of that bad power (black outs, brownouts, spikes, piss poor transformers and shoddy wiring) and other systems outright failed left and right. But because of my CGs brick-on-a-rope power cable and hatch-type disc access maintenance was easy. Yet I never once had to clean the lens, or replace the power cable or even place it in a "dust free" container. Its still humming along now just fine.

My one complaint is the eject button; of the two systems I own (one bought just for Iraq, cause I thought it would destroy it) both have broken eject switches, something I've seen and several other GCs also.

There are sites that sell the Dreamcast GD-mechanisms containing the lens. Even if these run out it's possible replace the Dreamcast lens with a lens from a standard CD player.

So I'd say 4-6 years of moderate use based on one guy's experience at least.

I had the same problem, mine was caused by dirty contacts on the power connector on the main board. Once they were cleaned it was fine.
