SubjectMortal Kombat TV game new Reply to this message

Anybody played this? I could have sworn that I read somewhere it was the Genesis port, but the screenshots on the box sure look like either the arcade or SNES versions. I'm wondering how well the TV game stacks up to its arcade counterpart.

From the bits I've seen in magazines about it, they say it is arcade perfect. Of course, they say that about the arcade compilations for the consoles too... They don't nitpick miniscule differences the way us retrogames do ;)

None of the console ports were arcade perfect. The Genesis version very scaled back graphics and poor quality sound, the only thing it had going for it was just the blood.

The SNES version had much better graphics and sound than the Genesis version, and would have been a closer arcade port had it not been for Nintendo's censorship.

Thankfully MKII for the SNES had the blood, and was a pretty faithfull port of the arcade (Certainly not perfect, but it was very acceptable).

The Genesis may not have measured up the the arcade (or even the SNES) version in terms of graphics and sound, but it did have gameplay more faithful to the original arcade game.

Of course that doesn't answer anything about the TV Games version. I'm leaning towards it being a new port now that I think about it. The graphics are definately not from the Genesis version, it has blood and gore, so that rules out the SNES one, and I doubt that they have hardware that can emulate MK full speed that costs less than $20. I know they created new ports of the MK games for the Midway Treasures series, but they were less than arcade perfect...

SubjectI believe it's based on Genesis hardware new Reply to this message

But it may be an upgraded port.

Many other TV games by the same company have a few Genesis games, running with a mini Genesis that fits on a chip. The "muddier" graphics of the pad could be explained by a reduced color palette (the Genesis could only display 64 colors simultaneously, IIRC).

If the company had another chip in the pad, they would have already released other games based on it. The other gamepads are just embedded multiboot cartridges though (Sega collection 1 & 2, Sensible Software games, SF2'+CE). I believe someone has modded one of these pads to run any Genesis cartridge (but requires plugging a bunch of wires).

The only bad thing about these gamepads though is that they have mono sound, and no mixing. They could have thrown in a stereo jack if they thought a second cable was too expensive...
