I'm not a math whiz by any means but wouldn't version 1.0 come out right after v.99 instead of version .100?

I always though that the more numbers to the right side of the decimal the smaller the number was.

but of course a change to a full number (especially from 0 to 1) implies a big milestone, or a change from beta to release software

my guess would be the next version is called 0.9A

Think of it this way:

.98 < .99 > .100 < .101 <----------real life mathematics
.98 < .99 < .100 < .101 <----------MAME


However, i just wish they would drop the decimal point.

version 99, version 100, version 101.... then the kiddies would never see a 1.0, muhahaha :)

seriously, I don't know what's the big deal about not going for 1.00 then 1.01, etc, everyone knows 1.0 wouldn't be a final release with no more updates, it's just a number... I'd rather see them redefine the basics of version numbering, 1.0 ain't a first stable release. but hey if it keeps media attention and kids that can't wait for a 1.0 to come out, well hum, I guess it's a good idea then....

Just forget the damn leading "0.", next release will be the hundredth, no big deal.
On the other side if they name it 1.0, random people will think that all bugs have been solved and every game is playable full speed. Just think at all pseudo-scientific (read for nerds) websites or magazines that will make a news report about it and at the raise of newbie's questions on the mame board ;)

I never realized that there was such a fuss about the numbering system until I read those links posted below. I only asked because I thought the numbering was wrong which it appears to be. Looks like someone refuses to use normal numbering system because they want to be stubborn.

I was getting the same crap for Laser when I went from version 0.9 to version 0.10.

It's system for determining releases of programs, not math.

And most importantly, who cares.

Agreed; I would just like to add that in some countries the period isn't the decimal separator (in France we write 3,14 for pi); likewise in software development it's mostly used to separate major/minor/etc releases. So all the whining is baseless; the period is a generic separator, and math doesn't end with decimal numbers so please avoid playing smartass.

... that the periods indicate a separator, rather than a decimal point. It just so happens that Mame is only using one separator.
(That makes it easier to deal with in my mind anyway)

I was talking to someone the other day and he wanted to know why we couldn't release v1.0. He's fed up with downloading all the roms and he just wants a v1.0 so that he can give up and wait for v2.0.

MAME didn't invent the version numbering system it uses. So we aren't redefining maths.

For the people that realise it's just a way of tagging the releases then the current version works well. For others then there is no hope anyway, so why bother changing.
