What I've understood is that one of PS2's problems was that it was quite different/difficult to develop on, especially compared to an XBox. For example, what I know is that Sun has been busy with a JRE implementation on PS2, but found that it was very hard to create a performant, full spec JVM on it, and eventually it never happened (this was not the only reason, though). I also understood that PS3 is going to be easier; one of the reasons should be OpenGL support instead of some proprietary way of programming PS2's GPU. I never programmed on PS2 nor PS3, though, this is just what I heard.
