SubjectLet's talk about Playstation games on the Playstation 2 and HDLoader new Reply to this message

Could someone with some technical know-how please fill me in on the incompatibility of HDLoader and Playstation games? What's the fundamental difference between them and Playstation 2 games that makes them unable to play off of/install to the hard drive? Does the PS2 just disable access to that portion of the system when it detects a PS1 game? Is it because the system is already booted up into "PS2 Mode"?

Just something I was wondering on my drive home from work today.

In other news, what the fuck does a well groomed african american individual have to do to locate a copy of the Xbox Action Replay locally? Jesus, I must have called everywhere within 20-30 miles looking for one.

My Xbox demands that it be softmodded this week, as it craves having Xbox Media Center installed on it. Right now it's pretty happy running Outrun 2 (fuck the haters, the game rocks), but it'd be more happy if it was acting as my HTPC :(

PS1 games will not work with HDLoader. The IOP which used to run the hdd modules, is also used to run PS1 games. It cannot do both tasks at the same time.

You could make a PS1 emulator that ran off the EE. Then you could have a hdloader for PS1 games but I really doubt the PS1 emulation would be better than Sony's.

Without getting too technical, the answer is yes. The PS2 has an actual PS1 CPU to run original PS1 games. Something about the way things are hooked up, that you can't access both that and the hard drive at the same time.

But now that you have an XBox, there is a PSX emulator for it that will run ISOs off the hard drive. That's the next thing I'm going to try this week.

You may not need to. Check tutorial here. I haven't tried that one yet (went out and bought an AR), but I have done the controller-to-PC, and it works great. If you still want AR, PM me.

Yes. Yes it does. Sixtoe will also agree with us =)

RELAX and just have fun.
Remember, it's all about the games.

Ahh ok, neato. Figured it had something to do with the HD not being accessable and what not, but I never really knew. Glad we cleared that up.

In other news, I bought Stretch Panic today for $6, despite thinking the game is a piece of shit.

Seriously, a PS2 game would have to be on par with Criticom for PS1 for me to not pick it up at $6.

Nah, I'm not really interested in playing Playstation games with an Xbox controller. Interestingly enough, my Xbox is the only system hooked up to my tv...everything else is hooked up to my PC, so I wind up playing my PS1 games on my PC either via my PS2 or via SSSPSX (depends if I want to capture videos or not).

One of these days I'll pull an old PS1 out of the mothballs and hook it up to the tv for old time's sake.

Heh, I like that method, but it's not for me :) I think I'll just order an AR from Target and call it a day :)

for reals, I talked to three people about the game today and after opening up with, "Hey, have you ever played Outrun 2?" they all replied with how much the game sucked. No one could expand on what they didn't like about it, so I'm guessing there's just some popular anti-Outrun opinion floating around infecting people in much the same way the pro-Gran Turismo and pro-Final Fantasy opinions float around.

Tangent, but it blows my mind just how versatile the Renderware engine is. Can't believe that it powered Headhunter, Grand Theft Auto III, Burnout, Sonic Heroes, and ESPN Major League Baseball. That's just fucking cool.

Stretch Panic is not *that* bad. It's not exactly Gunstar Heroes, but IMO Treasure can't make a genuinely bad game. (And the PS2 bargain bin contains many far worse games).

You saying AGH is bad? I was considering picking up the import.

Let me save you a few $$ by saying: Don't.

It's because of it that I'm holding off on the new Gunstar Heroes.
