I understand that due to the overall progress of playable emulation, we've come to a point where a large chunk of the mainstream arcade/console history has been emulated to a playable level for the most part, and that due to this as well as hitting walls like encrypted chips and super powerful hardware systems, emulation has generally slowed down, to where its no longer as active as it was 4-7 years ago. What i'm trying to say, do you think Emulation is at its twighlight, to where in the grand scheme, barring some stuff here and there, we've gone nearly as far as we can realistically get at least for the time being?

So is it ending????????????

This has come up every now and then. Actually everything that gets more than two peoples attention for more than a year will sooner or later face the same question, be it the Simpsons, Christianity or Latino music.
All these plus emulation get the same anwser from me.

- Have these passed their initial hype, their golden years or simply put their highest pitch of momentum?
- Yes! Definitely!
- Will these die, go away, fade into oblivion?
- No, absolutely not.

Here is something even I don't like about emulation: commercialism. It made everything worse over the last few decades, be it operating systems, the internet, Science Fiction and Fantasy, televison, the movies, music and the arts, sportcars, the image of beauty, happiness and selfconfidence and also emulation. But it will not kill it.

In a few years emulation will be dead to me and many people who consider themselves dedicated followers of the scene. Many things have died this way in my mind like saturday morning cartoons. I don't consume them anymore, have close contact to anybody who does and don't know if the scene is bigger or smaller than I knew it or if it is even nonexistent. But I believe, not know, that there are still in existence, because I have a feeling that these were more than just a fad. I have the same feeling with emulation. It will always be out there. But I propably won't care for it forever.

If that doen't awnser your question then you just spend alot of time reading some rubbish. I hope your happy now.

Although it may not be very obvious, there is still a LOT that emulation has yet to do. The obvious answer is that systems like the Xbox, Gamecube, and PS2 still aren't well emulated... but there are also less common systems like the CD32 and CD-i that really haven't gotten the same attention as the NES has. If I'm not mistaken, UAE still hasn't really done CD32 quite right.

Many would also argue that the emulation we have is still insufficient. I've heard many complaints that SNES emulation still has a long way to go, especially when it comes to sound... and are there any NES emulators that actually emulate ALL of the mappers out there? Do they all have perfect colors? Dosbox is another emulator that still needs a lot of work. And although it's not really an emulator per-se, I look forward to FreeSCI handling some of the later Sierra games.

There has also been a gradual migration of emulators to console systems like the Dreamcast, GP32, Xbox, and more recently even the PS2, Gamecube, and PSP. And if you haven't checked out the GP2X yet, then I suggest you do some web searches, because it's potential for emulation is very exciting. I doubt it will be very long before someone cracks the Xbox 360 and we start seeing emulators ported to it.

I would say that for the most part, there is a sufficient amount of stuff emulated to a sufficient degree that people (including myself) have become content with what's available, but believe me, even if a lot of the work is behind the scenes and mostly invisible to the end-user, there is still much more to come.

Emulation blew the minds of countless of people. Who here still remember the feeling when you've ran Art of Fighting for Neo Geo when it just became playable?

Now of course many people have been exposed to what emulation is, know what it can do, and its limitations. The rom whoring n00bs have risen and died. Remain only the few still technically interested that gather in sites like this one.

It's a good thing... I can do without the drama that plagued the board at the peak of the CPS2 days. :-)

Yes, when I looked up , I could see the sky falling. By Toutatis...

As I'm quoted saying on the MAMEWorld front page, "Emulation is growing up. Try not to get left behind". There are no "quick scores", and e.g. Gradius 4 isn't all that playable, but it's still awesome to see it come up and run. It's a matter of adjusting your expectations - in some ways, emulation's more thrilling than ever.
