In many of the more relaxed civilizations on the Outer Eastern Rim of the Galaxy, the Hitch-Hiker's Guide has already supplanted the great Encyclopaedia Galactica as the standard repository of all knowledge and wisdom, for though it has many omissions and contains much that is apocryphal, or at least wildly inaccurate, it scores over the older, more pedestrian work in two important respects. First, it is slightly cheaper; and secondly it has the words DON'T PANIC inscribed in large friendly letters on its cover.

i.e., enough active users who care that can keep an eye on things and keep things clean from vandals, and admins that can patrol and lock down real problem areas until the problems go away. Retrogames has neither (well, it might have the first, but definitely doesn't have the second).

aside for the goatse cascade that would end up on the page every other update, there would probably be more news that way. the problem isn't with wiki, it's with wikipedia. and atlas farted.

That's the problem with any open system. There are always losers out there who want the system to fail, and post crap on the page.

If the crap isn't edited fast enough, the general visitor will just stop visiting, as most people don't know how an open system works.

That's why wikipedia works, and that's why emucamp's system failed.

There just aren't enough tech-savvy visitors to keep the system in check for a niche site such as a retro gaming and emulation site.
