Where can I find out info about their format specification? I am thinking of a project about making a player that can play sound off these roms.

You are about a decade late ;) Google Qsoundplayer etc.

As far as information goes, MAME source is probably the first place to look for.

M1 is another project worthwhile checking out, though no source (I think)

M1 - The best sound emulator, supports loads of systems/games as well.

Nebula Jukebox - Good, fairly specific to a handful of systems.

QPlayer - Out of date.

Hoot - Overcomplicated, almost impossible to use

Amuse - Now been superceded by M1, not sure if this ever got an official release...

I remember trying to understand mame's sourcecode about a year ago...But it was no diffrent from my college project...which I intended to copy off my friend. I just cant understand other prople's work before I do it myself.
