Meh. Why did I even bother if it doesn't work? Anyway, from the source I found that these are the ROM requirements:
gradius4.zip = 14,502,296 bytes 837A10.14P 837A09.16P 837A05.14T 837A04.16T 837A14.32U 837A13.24U 837A16.32V 837A15.24V 837C05.27P 837_A08.7S
silent_scope.zip = 14,458,594 bytes SS830A10.14P SS830A09.16P SS830B01.27P SS830A08.7S
racing_jam.zip = 14,838,073 bytes 676nc01.bin 676gna08.bin
No clue why the archive sizes are included. My gradius4.zip is smaller by about 400K and hornet doesn't complain. Anyway, the filename differences are 837_A08.7S in hornet as opposed to MAME's 837a08.7s, and 837C05.27P as opposed to 837c01.27p in MAME. And the capitalization of course. Note the number difference in the second ROM. Probably a typo on Hornet's coder's part. Maybe the underscore on the first ROM is too. Of course, as Santeri pointed out it doesn't work. In fact, once Hornet loads Gradius 4 nothing seems to happen at all- just the same black box you get if it doesn't load anything. And yes, I tried the emulation options (run/stop/reset) in the menu. Maybe in a future release...
