Subjectsome specs of Namco System22 hardware, vs Sega's MODEL-2 new Reply to this message

it would be nice if arcade System22 emulation
is perfect one day. for now, VivaNonno remains
the most *useful* solution since MAME is far
to slow even on the fastest PCs, even if MAME
is more accurate.

One cannot play arcade Ridge Racer, Ridge Racer 2
or Rave Racer very well on MAME (if at all).

I came across some of the specifications for
Namco's System22, the hardware that powered
arcade Ridge Racer, Ridge Racer 2, Cyber Commando
(sequel to Cyber Sled) Ace Driver,
and Ace Driver: Victory Lap,

System22 gets compared to Sega's MODEL 2.

It's from Next-Generation magazine #1
(or the equivalent EDGE magazine), in the preview
of the Playstation version of Ridge Racer.

note that Playstation and its arcade-brother,
System11, are nowhere *near* as powerful as System22,
thus the large downgrade with Playstation version of
Ridge Racer made in 1994, or any other System22 to Playstation translation.

In System22, is the 'TR3' rendering chip the key
to getting exact emulation of System22's graphics ?
I assume the DSPs provide all the T&L / geometry
transforms for the TR3 chip.

Wrong. With the most recent version of MAME, a 3GHz Pentium 4 or so can run System 22 games at a playable rate if frameskipping is turned on. Additionally, System 16 is a hell of a lot better source for arcade board information than some crappy magazine that can't even spell "Gouraud" correctly. Welcome to 2006!

Oh, additionally, here's a comprehensive overview of System 22's hardware, and here's a comprehensive overview of the base Model 2 hardware. By any metric, it's a hell of a lot better than a clip from an article where the author didn't know what he was talking about.

I had the good fortune to play that on a huge ass fucking screen for a few credits, and it was fun as hell.

and Rave Racer is too easy with a dual analog-style controller.

You know what's really badass, though?

The characters look like the kids in the simpsons fake horror movie "The bloodening".

I believe there is a real movie to that tho (homicidal albino kids with shiny eyes and freaky zoom-ins and stuff)

It's been in MAME for a few years but the sound was finally emulated about 6 months ago. Fantastic game that got plenty of play from myself and my friends when we'd roll into the arcade (we were originally drawn to it because the KoF 98 machine was full, IIRC)

Ridge racer isn't a good game to show off the playstation's abilities. It was almost certainly developed before the final chipset was finished & also there was no such thing as the performance analyser then.

It still has a long way to go to beat system 22, but the hires ridge racer that can with RR4 brings the gap closer.

The performance analyser was also what made Tekken 3 possible on the Playstation. Best achievement on the PSX IMO.
