I found out there was a Sega Saturn version of the game.

anyone ever played it? how does it compare to the PSX version?

More load times (frequently hitches in the middle of rooms), sprites don't look quite as good, more slowdown, additional areas aren't very interesting, Maria is shoehorned in but is somewhat enjoyable. There's some new music as well, but it's not overly remarkable.

It's a terribly disappointing and rushed port. Also, it's all in japanese, so that may hinder your enjoyment of it.

That actually makes me want it. Maybe the voice acting is less over the top horrible.

The awesomely bad localization added so much to the game though. It really felt like a badass b horror movie fused with Metroid :) There's a release for the japanese PS1 that includes a pretty awesome soundtrack, too...you may want to keep an eye out for that.

cutscenes when you meet maria couple of times, possessed richter couple of times and the final dracula battle and the endings of course.

as for saturn version, i dunno, the new areas are sort of boring and bogus, and the music tracks... there are couple of "vampire killer" and "bloody tears" remixes or whatever which do not fit in the soundtrack at all, although two or three tunes are pretty good.

Owned it for a few years, superior version. While the Saturn doesn't do transparency and loads notably slower the game is just more enjoyable. There are added areas, most are small, but this one large area is quite fun to play out. You can from the start play as Alucard and the other 2 unlockables from the PSX (Richter and Maria) from the start if I remember right. The Japanese in the game won't stop you from playing, and seeing how badly acted (not sounding) the USA version of the PSX game is you'd probably welcome the more feeling found from the original sound.

I owned both versions of the game, played the Saturn one out like 3 times, couldn't do the PSX one more than once...went back to do the Saturn one again after it.
