It was comparable with a SNES pretty much, though the tech specs of the A500 were slightly lesser.

Computers have never been great breeding grounds for platformers, but some good ones on Amiga were Gods, Fire and Ice, Lionheart and especially the Turrican series.

THNX very much whut about Super Frog? That looks tight? How is the emulation for the Amiga is it decent or is it as bad as Jaguar Emulation? I don't know It doesn't seem as if people care about it all, not that I blame them. :P

IIRC thats pretty good. Zool 1 & 2, soccer boy were pretty smooth platformers. For early games, batman & buggy boy spring to mind. Alien Breed had a cult following.

Bubble Bobble & Rainbow Islands were quite good ports too, but now you might as well play the real thing. Alot of the great games were out on the PC too ( lemmings, indy 500, indiana jones etc ).

I better stop now, there were lots of great games and I don't have the time to play them right now :-) There were a lot of crud games, the a500 was around in the later half of the 80's & it rocked for it's time. The a1200 was a bit late coming in 92. More colours and a bit faster, the visuals were better than the genesis and snes ( although mode 7 effects were smoother on the snes ). However with only two years until the PlayStation & Saturn, any decent games developers had jumped ship already.

WinUAE does the trick and manages to set up good system defaults. There are a number of CPUs and chipsets that it emulates so it's reminiscent of setting up a PSX emulator. Normally you won't have to do anything major to play most games.

As noted there were plenty of great Amiga games. I grew up with it so I had a bunch. Shadow of the Beast was a good platformer for its time and has awesome music even to this day. The only problem was that it came from a time where games weren't meant to be walked through in a day or two like it is now...it's hard as fuck and there's no continues. BUT it was enjoyable at the time and high quality in comparison with other games. Knights of the Sky was an awesome flighy sim but it's probably hideous by today's standards. Defender of the Crown is an eternal classic that you need to pick up. If I'm not mistaken Flashback and Out of this World(Another World) initially came out on the Amiga. I still love those games and it's my favorite platform to play them on. Wings of Fury was a hoot.

There are gripes though.

1. It's hard to find the original game images (diskette images and I think they have the file extension ADF) that haven't been tampered with. Most have been hacked or have trainers from the early days of pirating and BBSs. Some games seem to require it so they're not all bad. The original protection would have you flipping through the game manual to type in the third word of the second pararaph of page 23. The hacks can bypass that so it's for the better. The trainers can give you unlimited health in Shadow of the Beast so that's cool. For rom purists it can feel a bit "dirty".

2. The Amiga is emulated down to its horrendous load times. Back then it didn't seem so bad and reading things off a diskette were undertandably slow but now it's just grueling. It wasn't a console system so games didn't just pop up. Be prepared to look at alot of loading screens.

Amiga emulation can be a little tricky, as there were a number of different models of Amiga, and many of them were somewhat incompatible with each other. Most games were programmed for an Amiga 500, which used a 68000 processor and the OCS chipset... however, later games were meant for the Amiga 1200, which used a newer, faster 68020 processor and the AGA chipset which offered some enhanced video modes (Many games were released in two different versions, since the 500 was still quite popular even in the dying days of the Amiga). WinUAE will let you set up a ton of different hardware configurations, so you'll have to see what works best for the games you want to play.

Some of my personal recommendations would be: Alien Breed, Superfrog, Gods, Scorched Tanks, Ultima V, Pools of Darkness, Turrican 2, Moonstone, Pinball Fantasies, Xenon 2, Awesome, The Chaos Engine, Dungeon Master, Chaos Strikes Back, Neuromancer, Oil Imperium, James Pond 2: Robocod, Liberation: Captive II, Nuclear War, Frontier: Elite II, and Project X.

It's possible to up the speed of the emulated floppy drive in WinUAE, but some games refuse to load if you do it.

You can also use savestates.
