I'm an old school gamer. I play NES,GB,GENES,SSNES,TG16.

but pretty much just play emu/games from consoles that I had when I was younger.

stuff that I didn't own back in the days like GG,NGP, Lynx, atari, coleco. I never use the emulators. or play any of their emulated games.

as is computeres like Amiga, Commodore, MX etc.. I never owned or used one. and I never touched their emulators..

how about u guys? do you play/use emus for system you never owned?

I never do that because as I don't have any nostelgia attachments or memories of them.

The only expection is for the Snes that i didn't had, but was in the same generation as my genny and the newer stuff that i never had, like the GBA, Saturn and PSX.

But i don't get much playing with games from before my main gaming days, which started with the genesis.

It's like you said, there's no nostalgic kick to playing those older ones.

All work and no play makes me..., well, you know the rest.

I have some Apple IIe, Amiga, and NES/Atari 2600 games I never owned, actually I bought a NES/Atari 2600 systems, because of emulation, but they took up too much space and had to be donated so I could buy newer consoles...

I am much like you, but I've gone like the pendulum of time on this one.

When I first started I made a name for myself (with this nick) over the last 10 years by doing Pasofami work, then into documenting the NES header format and doing a mass load of NES game releases. Beyond that I used to way back collect a heap of games for the NES, GB, SNES I didn't get a chance to play. I spread out a bit from there to systems I didn't have like the Sega things and NeoGeo arcade (and portable) but in the end I ended up owning some of Segas stuff and the NGPC, but all it, even a Turbo Duo went up for sale and I parted with the stuff. The one I dabbled with fairly for a bit and never did own for a brief time was the MSX. After that though in the last few years I've become sick of the gross amounts of time involved and even more the cash and I've sold off all my Sega, NEC, SNK, and Sony stuff and decided it's more time/money economical to pretend it's the 80s and I can just have 1 system and 1 portable to play with...so now I'm just back to Nintendo and with the emulators I just dink around with the GBA mostly but do bother with zsnes updates and pj64 (n64) too...oh and nestopia when it sees a revision.

I used to have the Intellivision back in the day I never played any roms for it.

Some decent games which were really something back then:

Sub Hunt
Deadly Disks of Tron
Burgertime
Night Stalker

There was a He-man game for it, I'll bet it's pretty crap but I'd still like to try it just because I could.

This was a 1984-1986 machine IIRC

I used to play Atari back before that but I don't remember much just that 2 player VS Airplane game and pong.

Everything since the NES I emulated and esp MAME games, I haven't played a console in 2/3 years maybe even bought budget PS1 games so I could play them on my PC.

Oh yeah and saturn but only because I couldn't be bothered with getting the emu working probably not ghettoware friendly anyway.

Also those little Nintendo hand helds like Donkey Kong Junior and erm I forgot the otherone? Something with a little guy and bases and Maybe the TMNT Konami hand held.

Play Gain Ground.

The nostalgia definitely is a huge draw as to what games I will play emulated. I am a bit retro-curious though...I never play any of the sega master or genesis games...so i was delighted to be able to bat a few games from those systems around. I don't do much of the TG-16...although I've dabbled.

My biggest reason to have started playing on emulators was due to all the neat super famicon Rpgs which never saw the light of day here in the US at the time of their release. Final Fantasy IV for starters. Does anyone remember the game 7th Saga? There was a Quasi-sequel made...Mystic Ark or something like that...wish that one had been translated...i wonder if that translation project will ever be completed.

peace

For the most part, no. Out of all the ROMS I have for the console emulators listed on my homepage, I'd say about 98% of them are for games that I owned/still own. I pretty much bought every game that interested me for each system I owned, going all the way back to the 2600 (back when the parents paid for the games), through to the N64. Even JPN games for PC-Engine, MegaDrive, and SFC, back when buying imports wasn't as common a thing to do.

I haven't bothered downloading the "complete sets" for anything, as I usually had a good reason for not buying a game when it came out (IOW, crap game). Off the top of my head, about the only one's I have now that I didn't have before are and FDS stuff, Dracula X (PCE), and Castlevania and Gradius 94 for X68000.

I haven't gotten into anything MSX or Amiga, or other systems I didn't own, except for the two games above.

On this same note, I feel no "extra joy" in playing pre-PSX console ports of arcade games, unless the console version had significantly different or additional gameplay compared to the arcade version.

C'mon, do something scary for Halloween, play Pac Man on the Atari 2600! If playing Pac Man on the 2600 doesn't scare you, the fact people paid $50 for the cart ought to horrify you.

I love playing it for a good laugh...

I would make a difference between "systems you've never owned" and "systems you've never seen". I've used several emus for all kinds of systems, but thinking about it I have barely touched those of machines that I never saw or heard of.

For example, I didn't hear about Vectrex until they were emulated, and I probably tried an emu once... but I've tried the TI/99, MSX, PC-98 emus because I've either used them at somebody's place, or read about them beforehand.

The only exception is maybe Chip-8, but that's because I wrote an emulator for it (it's the easiest thing to emulate).

After hearing so much about the Amiga; I had to try it and well it's pretty good. The Turrican series is awesome.

I also tried the Sharp X6800 computer emulator. I was impressed. Ports like Final Fight were pretty much arcade perfect. I loved playing Akumajo Dracula (Castlevania Chronicles) on it.

I never owned a Genesis because the SNES always kicked it's ass but of course I had to try it. There are so many great games for Genesis.

I had to try Neo Geo. I always wanted to own a Neo Geo system but could never afford it. Never owned a TG-16 and always wanted one. Well now I own a TurboGrafx Express with about 7 games but I never play it. I just play my DS. For TG-16 I use my Xbox.

So yeah I'm retro curious. I have tried a bunch of emus for consoles that I didn't own. I just don't touch anything with very crappy graphics like the Atari 2600 or the TI-99/4A. Those games just don't do anything for me. I love the old Nintendo though but compared to the Atari 2600 it has amazing graphics.

My first console I tried was the Atari 2600 and I loved it back then. That's until I touched a NES. I also spent a lot of time on my old TI-99/4A Computer. But now I could not enjoy those games anymore. I also own a Xbox and I can play any Xbox game I want but I rather play SNES or old Arcade games. My Xbox is my emulation machine. Lately I play lots of Nintendo and some SNES games on my Nintendo DS. I don't even play Nintendo DS games that much.

I like playing a lot of retro games. I don't play PC games either even though I have a powerful PC. Especially built for Mame :). First I don't have much time and second I enjoy older emulated games better.

Heck I like playing "Acid Tetris" a pretty sweet Dos Tetris clone. Plays great in DosBox.

Graphics do not make the game; gameplay does. I enjoy playing several of
the old Atari 2600 games such as Adventure, Haunted House, Yars Revenge,
Megamania, and Dark Caverns M-Network). None of them are graphically great,
but the graphics are serviceable and the games themselves are fun.

Strangely enough, I enjoy the Smurfs game on the Colecovision too.
