SubjectCapcom Sound Samples Reply to this message

I hope this is on topic ;)

Does anyone know where I can find information on how to extract sound samples from Capcom arcade ROMs and, more ambitiously, the track sequences as well? I have two reasons for doing this:

1. Develop my own Capcom remakes (based on existing ROMs)
2. Bring converted versions of the samples and tracks into Reason 3 or other tracker software so it's possible to do remixes, etc.

I know applications like the (very good) M1 player *can* play and save arcade tracks but I'd like to have the samples saved on their own and would also like to learn how to start working with the ROMs.

Thanks in advance and much grovelling,

Dodg

Capcom has made a lot of arcade games.

Do you mean games that use Q-sound?

For Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, the instrument sounds are in cd_q1.rom.

I tried opening them in Adobe Audition in raw format, and all the sounds are clearly identifiable but very distorted. Maybe if you experiment a little bit you'll get something usable out of it.

I believe the OKI6295 chip used on CPS1 is a sample player as well. I tried opening the roms from Willow too (uses the OKI), but I didn't find any sounds.

Maybe RB or someone else who's familiar with the hardware can tell you what format the sounds are in.

For games that use the YM-2151 I don't think there is a way unless you know Z80 assembler and are familiar with FM synthesis.

Thanks for taking a look at this :)

None of my audio applications liked the look of the files so I'll have to try and find an audio editor that can open them. I'm on a Mac but can run PC stuff through Virtual PC - does anyone have any software suggestions?

One approach that I tried some time ago was to download a source-code version of Ace to look at the sound routines, but it wouldn't compile in my copy of Visual C++ for some reason...ho hum :0 The MAME source code is a *bit* bloated so I didn't have much luck with this either.

On a general point, does anyone know how the Capcom guys developed all of these games anyway - what languages they used, that kind of thing?

Thanks in advance, etc.
