Hi folks,

I was wondering if any of you know how to run Starblade Alpha on ePSXe? I can't run this game (I have the original CD and am running off the CD). I have no problems with other games like ThunderForce V Pefect System, Lunar II, WipeOutXL, Nectaris, Ridge Racer, Ace Combat 3, etc. Starblade Alpha is the only game I have that doesn't run under ePSXe.

I googled for a bit and found that it only works with SSSPSX - I downloaded the latest version (.34) and it wasn't running. Any info (including plugins you use) would be appreciated.

I've always had bad luck with trying to play games off of the CD in anything other than pSX Emulator. You may want to rip an image of it (use something like Alcohol, CloneCD, or whatever if you want to preserve the subchannel data, else any ol' image builder that makes a bin/cue will work fine) and either load it directly or mount it with daemon tools and run it as a CD there.

What CD plugin are you using, if any?

Try with Pete Bernert's CD plugin and let it save the subcode from the CD to a file.
Afterwards direct the plugin to use the file instead of trying to read the subcode from the CD.

I've had some luck in the past doing it this way with other games.

You can also try CDRSapu (I think that's how it was called) which is also good at reading games that otherwise refuses to run properly.
AFAIR its original page doesn't exist anymore but you should be able to find it on ngemu.

Finally there's the odd chance that your optical drive simply isn't up to the task of reading this game properly.

I know my DVD drive doesn't want to read most Playstation CD's, but my CD-RW drive works well (It's a LiteOn 52x drive).

I tried using Alcohol 120% to make an image - it returned read errors. I also tried using pSX (I had version 1.8, so I used 1.11) and it returned read errors as well. Either my original CD is bad or my drive just can't read the CD properly (although I have no problems viewing the directory structure or files).

Oh well. Asking where I can download this as an iso is probably against forum rules. I should get Tekken 5, which is supposed to have Tekken 1,2,3 and Starblade! I don't have a PS2, but maybe I should pick one up!

I'm guessing your CD is toast, I loaded it up in EpsxE 1.60 and it ran fine, although a little slow on my ancient PC...

If I weren't trying to run 9 FireFox applications, and Outlook 200, and oops I had MAME32 loaded, maybe it would have ran a bit better...

BTW, to unlock Starblade in Tekken 5:

Star Blade arcade game:
Successfully complete arcade mode with all fighters.

Alternately, in the fourth level of the Devil Within mini-game, there is a door covered with rocks that is across a big hole. You cannot reach it by jumping. When the devil's bar is full (the red one). press L1 + Triangle to transform into Devil Jin. Then, stand looking towards the door and press L1 + Square to shot a beam. That beam will destroy the rocks and a path of floating steps will appear. Go through the door and you will find a little space ship rotating in front of you. Touch it to unlock the Star Blade arcade game without winning arcade mode with all characters.
