Pretty sweet comparison. Have you tried booting up the japanese version of Virtua Racing PS2 to see if it'd work in PCSX2? You might have better luck than with with the US released collection.

edit - just tried it and can't get past the main menu. Poop. At least the intro works!

I have the UK version (missing Alien Storm as it would have changed the rating in UK boo!) and it does the same.

Maybe on next PCSX2 it'll work.

Well if you need the japanese version for testing, give a shout. I bought a bunch of these as they came out and was pleasantly surprised when they released a bunch of 'em on a single disc in the US. Miffed that they didn't include Gain Ground, but I guess that was somewhat understandable omission. Ok, not really. I'm miffed.

:(

Oh well, good thing I imported that one, too!

(I haven't tried compressing VR yet, but the raw image is 150megs)

I used to own the Genny and Saturn copies of the game and they did impress me, but I always felt that the Genesis one was the best representation of the game as far as closeness to the original in gameplay and control. Damn shame those tools at Sega felt the right to charge $100 for the game...I got it from sega-parts.com probably 5-6years ago or so for $20 new, and that is worth it.

I liked that they included all of those new tracks and gameplay modes, but the game ran way too slow. The initial port of Daytona was better, overall. The go kart mode was pretty cool, but outside of that the rest of the game was bleh extreme.

At the time the Genesis version came out, I thought it was pretty impressive. Better than Stunt Racer FX, anyway. The 32x version also wasn't too shabby, but by the time the Saturn port came out it was just a pile of disappointment.

The only other Sega Ages game I'm looking out for is Afterburner, would like to see that!

Charline gave me hell when I whined about paying around $8.50 for it in 1999, she said "It was originally priced at $100, and you're getting it for less than 10% the cost, and you're whining? Get real!"

Yeah, it's a fun game, I'm glad it's in MAME now as well, but I'll be ticked pink if it ever gets emulated in a Genesis emulator as well...

That is a terrific review. Its been a while since I kept up with what's happening on the MAME scene. I never thought I'd see such progress on Model One emulation, considering the problems programmers were having a couple of years ago.

You have to wonder why Sony changed the camera angle on PS2!!! Maybe the handling difference has something to do with the PS2 joypad.

Does anyone know if Virtua Star Wars is playable yet?

I still find Virtua Racing to be quite playable from the steering wheel viewpoint on the PS2, and the handling changes were made most likely to appeal to a wider audience and to make the game easier. My only real beef with the PS2 version of the game is that they didn't correct the draw distance :(
