SubjectMednafen 0.8.4-rc1 new Reply to this message

Here's whatsnew:

Added preliminary support for inputting text directly into the selected address space in the debugger's memory editor.

Moved the temporal video blurring code in mednafen.cpp to vblur.cpp

Added settings "filesys.snap_samedir", "filesys.sav_samedir", "filesys.state_samedir", and "filesys.movie_samedir", default 0, that when
set to 1, will read/write the respective files from/to the same directory the game was loaded from. If you want
to use these, PLEASE read the documentation first, there are caveats!

PCE CD, PC-FX: Added support for MS WAV file offsets and lengths in TOC files.

PCE CD, PC-FX: Fixed a bug that caused CD-DA playback to be off by one sector(the first sector specified was being skipped).

Began work to allow settings to be temporarily overridden during netplay and movie playback.

PCE, PC-FX: Added settings "pce.disable_softreset" and "pcfx.disable_softreset", default 0, which when set to 1 will disable
simultaneous pressing of RUN and SEL. The current implementation kind of abuses the driver-side code that disallows opposing diagonal buttons
being pressed at the same time, so if we ever change that (undocumented) feature to go with the last-pressed direction rather than
clearing both, the description of these settings in the documentation will need to be updated.

PCE CD, PC-FX: Read operations and CD-DA playback will now be stopped when the RST signal is asserted(fixes soft reset issues on PCE CD
games).

Seriously, if someone were to build a quality GUI for it, the Magic Engine team wouldn't be able to give their emulator away.

Advantages over ME? I've been spending too much time with artwork lately to play with some console stuff (though I have been having some SNES fun today).

RELAX and just have fun.
Remember, it's all about the games.

Mednafen is better than Ootake too?

- Ported to multiple systems
- Multi-system support (uses VisualBoyAdvance for GBA, FCEUlra for NES, etc)
- Netplay
- Rewind function
- Multi-threaded video blitting and support for a variety of graphic filters
- Slightly better compatibility
- More versatile controller support

Downside being the emulator's setup is poop (setting up controllers in Mednafen is a bit annoying), has higher system requirements, and is CLI-based. There's some generic frontends that I've found for it and one or two specalized ones, but nothing remotely close to Magic Engine's GUI. Until it gets a nice, clean GUI like that, it's not going to take off. :(

For general use I'd probably take Ootake, though a problem I used to have before I picked up an Audigy 2 was that the audio wouldn't work with my onboard sound. I haven't been able to test with any other computers that might be affected (like laptops), but it's something to watch out for.

Other than that, I've never really run into any problems with it. Some people might be put off by the author's rough use of english in the GUI, but if you can look past that then it's a pretty usable emulator. It doesn't have all of the features of Mednafen, but it's got more than Magic Engine and it's both completely free and super-frequently updated (on average like 5 updates a month).

I do need to play around with the CD emulation in Ootake more, though.
