There is a decent discussion along these lines at MAMEWorld. In respects to Gauntlet Legends or any Arcade Game unable to be played at current system specs "Pi" made a good point here:
http://www.mameworld.info/ubbthreads/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Number=148624&page=0&view=expanded&sb=5&o=&fpart=1&vc=1
Specifically:
"...I remember when people were angry because Mortal Kombat was crawling on their systems, and asked for faster emulation, regardless of accuracy. However, nowadays we have systems good enough to run them. When the DCS sound system used in the MK series was emulated, again they were crawling again; again the current computers can handle it pretty well. If no one cared about correctly emulating MK then, now we would have MK emulation without real DCS, with glitches, and without anyone knowing how to correctly emulate that except by starting from scratch again.
That's why mamedevs are against patches, hacks, kludges, or any emulation shortcuts which might damage accuracy. You end doing the work not once, but twice or more. Mamedevs try to do it once, but doing it well".
Anyhow, the whole thread is actually pretty good reading.
