I grew up using the original Atari controllers. The only other joystick I consider decent is the Wico bat-style joystick. The Atari sticks kept breaking and the Wico never failed. Damn it's a beast!

One other comment - who decided that the joystick had to be on the left and the buttons on the right? I much prefer the joystick on the right and the buttons on the left, but controllers like that are almost nonexistent.
