I have two PS2 hotrods... they are both practically new... one still in box... is there an easy way to upgrade them to usb?

Years ago I remember looking into these. The feedback I got at the time was that the adapters would lag and/or drop key inputs, especially if multiple keys were pressed at the same time. You ever have any problems with that one?

I bought one of those SmartJoy FRAG adapters a few years back that let you hook up a keyboard and mouse to the (original) xbox. I managed to rig up the Hotrod to my xbox through that, but programming it was a pain in the ass and I could only get the 1p controls to work.

One more thing: If you use the usb adapter, do you still need to have a keyboard plugged into the Hotrod for the Hotrod to function? I've never gotten mine to work without a keyboard plugged into it when the computer boots up.

Every once in a while there's a little lag when the PS2/USB cable is used, but that was the only inconvenience. It was as simple as connecting the cables and then plugging the USB end into the computer. I went into the Default Game Options and enabled HotRodSE input and never had a problem.

I never once had to plug a keyboard into the HotRod to make it work.

I have one of those cable adapters, but they work pretty crap in Vista (like a bunch of other things). If it's recognized then it works fine until the cable is unplugged... then... it's hell to get it working again. The only thing that works seems to be a reboot, which is very annoying.

I read in some website that it's because these adapters are mostly a wire adapter, but not a proper USB controller. There is apparently another adapter that powers up as a standalone USB keyboard and does proper mapping from the PS/2 input.
I looked everywhere but I have not been able to find one in a local shop.

Has anybody ever used one of those? (they look like a little fat black box with a USB connector sticking out).
I can get one online, bit $$$ but worth it if it does work as advertised.

This may not be considered "easy" but is definitely not "hard" for someone with basic skills and would give the best result possible. Swap out the PS/2 encoder for a usb based one such as groovygamegears gpwiz.
