A lot has changed indeed. Emulation is dead. No one gives a shit about it now. A new version of DEmul DC emulator came out and there were like 3 posts about it at ngemu.com, all the emulation forums are dead. I think mame is the only emulator that has frequent updates. Also Raine lately and some version of FBA. Although I don't know why since I think they just emulates about 99% of the games already in mame.

Everyone can clearly see how emu authors have no intentions of updating many emulators because no one cares. Not because the emulators are complete but because there aren't that many emulation fans any more I guess.

Oh man whatever happened to the Zinc emulator? There just is not hope of playing some games in mame at full speed when a computer fast enough to play them doesn't exist yet.

I wish a version of mame with vide hardware acceleration would come out already!

That's a good thing. It got rid of all the drama and leaves people who actually care enough to try something cool for the sake of it. Like Andreas Naive who came along and figured out the CPS3 encryption without all the XOR hoarding fiasco.

Yes it means that we'll see less changes, and it's a bit less fun to come and check the boards, but so what?

We probably already emulated most of what was made before 2000, and already have many things from 2000-2005. There probably will be some renaissance whenever the internet becomes faster, BD-R discs cheaper (at 30 or 50 GB per disk) and somebody comes out with a full speed PS2 and Gamecube emulators.

There a few good boards left though, but with a slightly different purpose (and much less drama queens). Such as the GP2X forums (gp32x.com) which have a very active homebrew community with very cool ports for that machine (a Linux-based handheld). Obviously though, if you don't have one then it's not that interesting. Somebody should emulate a GP2X...

Seemingly any news that wasn't posted about on the Retrogames boards over the past 5 or 6 years has slipped by me. I thought that Dreamcast emulation was nowhere close to being playable, PS2 emulation was still a slow, buggy mess, and that the DS hadn't even been looked at.

I was *shocked* to see a video on Youtube a month or two ago that there was a fucking Wii emulator that seemed to run Smash Brothers full speed. Last I looked, Gamecube emulators weren't getting past showing title screens.

lol no kidding. I thought PS2 emulation was crap still, I just found out that there are DS emulators that play most retail games?

The thing is that emulation news are no big news anymore. A lot of things have happened but no one really is interested that much. Look back when CPS2 encryption was broken, how a new playable CPS2 title was always big news. How Neo Geo emulation was big news. How N64 emulation was huge.

Now Dreamcast emulation is meh!, no you say there is Wii emulation? I would just love to see Xbox emulation but sadly that's not getting any where. Also why hasn't anyone taken code from mame from those unplayable games and make an emulator out of it with optimized code to make those games playable?

I really see emulation as being almost dead because not many people care any more.

I think Arbee either has no interest or is still mad that MAME++ still exists, either way I would not hold my breath in seeing a new release of Zinc. To me the emulator is dead.

The new and improved King of Lamers 2003!

My most fondest memories are of MAME and CPS2 emulation.

Things have changed in the last 10 years. Even I don't give a crap about emulation any more except maybe for Model 3 and its varients.

Wow, I used to hit this site (and davesclassics, and classicgamer, and emuviews, et cetera) on a daily basis - it was so exciting and fun. And now we are just being nostalgic about being nostalgic -

I don't really feel to bad about it I guess, it sucks that there's not that constant flow of "everything old is new again" but at least lots of old, formerly inaccessible things are just out there to be picked up and loved. Retrogames (and their style in general) have enjoyed a litte bit of a renaissance these last few years and they are no longer completely relegated to the back of the closet.

Eventually people will go crazy with emulation/rom trading again for later-generation systems, but I don't really care about that. It was fun while it lasted!
