Was there ever an attempt to port this over to the palm? I have a Visor Prism and would love to play MAME on it...

Oldie

ps If not, what is the best PocketPC device to use?

Plam Organizers do not have enough processor or memory to even try to port to them. Even with the power of a 200Mhz PocketPC many games still run slow.
The iPaq seems to play many more games at a decent speed. It has a few problems relating to multiple button presses, but this will be overcome shortly. Casio Devices seem to be the second choice for Games. Probably due to its Gamepad and 16bit Color Screen. Ultimately the choice comes down to your own personal preference.

It sums up to this:

iPAQ - better speed (quite a bit)
Casio - Better screen (much better colors and contrast) and controls

Casio EM-500 is also cheaper and it comes with $100 rebate.

Ok, now I'm torn. Should I get the iPAQ, E-125, or EM-500. I've been researching and so far here's what I have found:

iPAQ - Expensive, MAME button problem, Propriatary expansion slot (???), Screen is not as nice, but it's fast.
EM-500 Cheaper ($399 with $100 rebate), no problems with MAME, abeit slower, only 16mb, Nicer screen, MMC Expansion slot???
E-125 Just as expensive as iPAQ but with 32mb, nicer screen, Type II expansion slot.

I have a spare 128mb CF card that i was intending to use for this, but it seems the EM-500 and iPAQ don't take them? Oh and every time I see EM-500 it makes me think of the EM-50 project (remember the movie Stripes?)

Thanks for the input.

iPAQ can take that card if you purchase CFII sleeve for it. IMHO that sleeve makes iPAQ both ugly and too big, but that card is not something you should waste. EM-500 can't take it no matter what you do. MMC cards are much smaller than CF (and completely different architechture).

No? What was the EM-50 project?? Please give some web links or something!

While the iPAQ has the speed, MameCE3, Mameboy is more fun on the EM500 and E125, even though the games are slower. It boils down to the gameplay and controls. The iPAQ not only has the issue with multiple button presses not being recognized but it also causes diagonals to not be acknowledged either. Also the joypad and button arrangement leaves alot to be desired when compared to the Casio line.

The latest emulators are getting better with the iPAQ shortcomings like PocketEngine and PocketFC which plays games in landscape mode with virtual buttons on screen. An overclocked iPAQ can play PC Engine games with sound with practically no slow down. Domenico did a great job with that emulator. Also, Techmaster will address on-screen buttons in a later release so there is still hope for iPAQ owners to benefit from this feature.

Just like Marco said before speed or gameplay, which is most important to you and which one are you willing to sacrifice.

EM-50? Wasn't that the RV with built-in gun turrents and rocket launchers?

I don't really like the onscreen controls, so that being my preference, along with using my existing CF card without the need of a condom, I went with the E-125. The fact that I will be using it with my outlook calendar, tasks, etc. didn't really factor in much, since they are about the same in that catagory. Should be here tomorrow.

Yes the EM-50 project was the secret project RV turned tank that Bill Murry took out to get washed... "Thats the Fact Jack"

What's PocketEngine and PocketFC? Google didn't turn up any links.

When you get your Casio, don't forget PocketQuake :)
http://www.pocketmatrix.com/pocketquake/

Don't forget that your Casio will be able to play videos, MP3's, and you can do things like handwriting recognition (Newton style) with Transcriber, as well as do street maps with PocketStreets, etc.

The iPaq has numerous advantages including being smaller and slightly lighter than the Visor Prism (!). It utilizes a color screen that is reflective and can be seen easily in direct sunlight. The E125 is bigger than the Visor Prism. Neither E125 or Prism can easily be seen in direct sunlight.

But yes, if you're going just for videogames and don't mind the speed, the Casio is the way to go. But if you were hoping for something as small as your Prizm, you're in for a shock: The E125 is a brick (but built rock solid like one).

I agree with everything Mark said, but ALSO keep in mind that iPAQ + CF sleeve (which is the only way to add more memory to the device) makes it even bigger or about the same size as E125, not to mention prism.

Not completely true if you modify the CF Sleeve, in which case you only get a slightly larger top but the rest of the device is still slim. A fellow was doing the modification for people and calling them the Silver Slider. :)
