SubjectMameCE3 WIP update new Reply to this message

Hi everyone,
First off, MameCE3 now has game screens centered in most games !
A few odd ones seem to be fighting the fix, but I'll see if I can WhIP them into shape by the next release. :) Thanks to Darren for his centering code. It didn't exactly work for me but it helped me to figure out where to direct my energy.
FYI Darren, move your centering routines to the Create_Display routine and use a static variable or 2. This will better optimize the draw_to_screen (blit) routines, since Create_Display is only done once when you start the game.

Second, Sound has been fixed in many games! Sound has been cleaned up a bit and I think I fixed the memory leak that was being caused by it (cross your fingers). Unfortunately there is now a discreet hum in the background but it is very low and can almost be ignored now that the sounds work mostly correct in many more games. Mr Do is much more playable now that the sound is working right.
That annoying high pitched hum at the beggining of Donkey Kong turns out to be music :) It is more understandable and I think, if I can fix that annoying low hum in all games, it should also fix the problem in Donkey Kong.
My Sound routines are definitely improving and I will go back to tinkering with them after I fix some other stuff.

Next 2 hot fixes i'll be working on are, Screen rotation and On-Screen buttons.

Thats it for the moment. If things go well expect a new release real soon :)

Cheers,
-Techmaster

How about the delay when exiting a game and going back to the main screen on MEGA MAMECE3? Has it gone a bit faster? Thanks

Wow, amazing news! Screen centering sounds great :) And if you manage to get rotation to work too that would be extremely nice.

A feature that would be very very nice too is hiscore saving. It's just not the same when you know that the impressive (and darn hard to beat!) hiscore your friend just made will be gone the next time you start the game...hehe

I dont care if it takes even longer to get back to the menu if those changes make it in ;)

Whatever is in the next version it is still very impressive work.

High Score saving was removed from the official MAME in version 0.36 final.
To regain hiscore saving capability I will need to examine how it works in the current version.
I'll put that near the top of the list becuase I also like to retain my hi scores :)

Hey Tekhmaster, i'm new to this (portables that is). I just got a Compaq iPaq which after the cassiopia, and Jornada i had, this is definitly the fastest i've witnessed yet. I was wondering if there are still a lot of optimizations left to be done that could improve speed a decent bit. I noticed some games run faster on iMAME vs. on yours, and wondered what caused that. Granted i prefer yours of course cause of the choice of MUCH more games playable, even if slower (so far) then more optimized ones. We all played some mame games (PC) 23-28fps and still didnt complain and enjoyed them.

BTW- on my 1gig AThlon,256m PC133 ram, GF2 w/tvout, i haven't played any games that actually skip any frames yet, but took a while to decide to upgrade from my K6-3 450. WORTH IT TOTALLY!!!

Yes I think there is still more speed increases to be had. Besides the obvious such as recompiling some of cores with assembler there are other areas that can be tweaked. Also rebuilding some things with c++ may help as well.

I still have some bigger items to work on but as soon as they are complete I will be going back to work on speed tweeking.
Also keep in mind that faster devices are due over the next year as well :)

I'll have to reload iMame and run some tests, I don't remembering it being to much faster. Any specific games?

I know what you mean about the desktop upgrade. I was very satisfied after I upgraded to the 1GB Intel, 512MB 133Mhz, ATI Pro w/tv out and my old VoodooII plus the 19in Viewsonic! I was ever happier when I added the Sound Blaster Live Platinum card and Cambridge 4.1 Surround Sound Speaker system. Really makes them games Rock :)

Is this a version we can get now, or so we wait until you have more things tweaked? thanks for the efforts - MAME on winCE is very cool.

Have you tested games with sound on Casio? Is there a big performance hit with sound enabled?

Yes unfortunately. Whenever you enable sound the performance drops. Still haven't been able to overcome that.

Yes - the games stutter in play (off and on) if sound is on. Some more than others. Mr Do! works quite well with sound on.
