if I place a mamece game rom in the same folder as I have placed previous game roms that worked(meaning that they showed up in the mame ce3 list on my em500)does that mean that the roms don't work or is there a specific game rom type that i should be looking for or what?please help.

If the game is enabled and it is a good ROM file it should show up in the list.
Select "Show All Games" to see if the game is enabled.
Open the zip file with Winzip and/or try it in desktop MAME to see if it is a good rom.

I've had the same - I DL a rom that doesn't show up on the list, I found that if I renamed the rom it would then show up on the list... but still doesn't run.

It would REALLY BE NICE if there was a large zip of ROMS that work available somewhere. It sure would save us a lot of work. Just think... everyone of us has to fine, download, install and try each rom, then delete or keep.
It's a lot of work and a major time waster. If someone had a huge zip of all roms that work it would be the best feature yet!

Even the rom sites are setup poorly - these roms are very small - often 50-80k. Yet they force us to dl them one by one... with menus and clicks between downloads. I have a cable modem and could suck the entire library off in a zip in a few seconds. So why isn't this offered anywhere?

Because, there are such things as page hits and paying for bandwidth. I could upload the whole bunch of roms on some geocities server only to get them deleted day after only to repeat the whole proces. It's not really legal to make ROMs available just like that. It's easier for me just to send the roms to people who ask for them.

If you download current Roms for MameCE3 they should work without renaming. (if the game is enabled). If you have to rename them it means you are probably downloading the wrong version.

The problem is that such a zip file would be ILLEGAL.

Anyone posting such a Zip file would be violating law as well as the standard acceptable practices related to Emulator agreements. Plus they would risk getting their account shut down due to copyright infringment.

THis isn't offered becuase it violates the common general practice of Emulators. Plus anyone posting such a File would be atacked and shutdown by the ISDA, most likely.
If you need to get all roms at once try using a NNTP News Reader. They usually post floods of releases on request or when a new release has been announced.
