Hmm, that should be enough I would think.
Did you try doing a Soft reset before playing the game. Memory could be fragmented and a soft reset can reorganize it. ALso did you leave a meg or 2 free in storage? Always a good idea.
Are you using current roms from MAME Version .36. What game are you trying to play with sound? Try Frogger and Mr Do. They are small and work well for testing.
