I read in this review:
http://www.the-gadgeteer.com/pocketpc-emulators-article.html

That the MAMECE executable can be run from the storage card???

Is that right? That would save so much space obviously for other emus taht can't.

Well, I haven't setup MAMECE yet, but I have ALL, and I mean all, my programs running from my new 64MB MMC card on my EM-500. No problem, including CE/gg which I like very much.

Afew don't work that way, like PocketGB. Also I reas Marconnelly's reply to you rpost saying you wouldn't have much room left for anything else, so I was concerned.

As far as I know all the available emulators can be installed to Memory card with no problems whatsoever. Some have installation procedure and some you have to copy manualy to a folder on a card.

Very very happy to hear that. My storage card happens to be an IBM 1GB Microdrive. I xpect to be able to fit just about all my emus and a terrific number of games to it.

I have the executable on my storagecard on my EM-500. Only tricky thing is that you have make a dir on the main unit to keep your hiscores.

SO, the hiscores are actually stored in main memory?? Do they use a lot, say if you had over 100 games??

Can this be fixed in the code??

Yes All versions of MameCE3 can run from Storage card. During the installation, choose no when it asks if you want to 'install it to the defualt location', then select storage card instead of main memory.

I install MameCE3 into Main memory and install MegaMamce3 to the storage card. Then I put the top 5 games I like in Main memory and I put the other 20 or so games on the storage card. This way I get a variety of choice with or whithout the storage card inserted. I do however have the iPaq 64MB model so I have a bit more space than others ;).

As someone pointed out, the only thing you absolutely need to have in Main memory is the Hi score folder (only if you want to save hiscores, otherwise even that does not need to be there). This is hard coded becuase it required a tweak to one of the core files (which I try not to make any changes to when possible).
The up side is, no matter where you install the Exe too, you can store your roms in any of the following locations and MameCE3 will detect them:
\Program Files\MameCE\roms\
\Storage Card\Program Files\MameCE\roms\
\My Documents\roms\
or \My Documents\

Hiscore-files are very small so even 100 wouldnt take up more than 10k I would guess.

If I don't create that folder, will it just leave it alone??

Yes, it won't be created automatically, I think. You will just not get your hiscores and button configs (now that's a catch) saved.

So, that same directory for the hiscores is the .cfg directory?

No! There are two directories that you should create in Main Memory:

\Program Files\Mameboy\cfg

and

\Program Files\Mameboy\hi

Memory print of these two folders will be insignificant (10K or so)

Do they use the same dirs? By the way, these posts have been for MAMECE.

MameCE3 creates the cfg in the folder where the executable is installed. the hi folder is autocreated if you use hisscore.dat (which is installed by default). Just delete hiscore.dat from the executable folder and the hi folder will not be created. As Marconelly points out it is very small even with a couple 100 games, so its almost not worth the hassle. But the option exists if you need every last ounce of Main Memory clear :)

you don't need to have your hi score folder nor the cfg folder in main memory, all you need is to copy the hiscore.dat file to /Program Files/mamece/ leave the Hi and cfg folders on the memory card when the install program left them, everything will work fine, hi scores will be saved to the storage card.

No, they do not use the same dirs. As Techmaster said, with MAMECE3 CFG folder will be created in the folder where mame is installed. As for the HI folder, I'm not sure but I think it gets autocreated too so you don't have to worry about it.
