Get a Q-Pad from Hanaho (or some such thing). The 36/37 series iPaq has the hardware simultaneous button-press bug, and the only way around it is to either change the hardware (with a game pad add-on) or use a "virtual pad", which won't work with Mame since the game takes up the entire display area. Go to This Site for more info. Also, these gamepads aren't made to fit an iPaq with its expansion pack, so when I got mine, I just removed the four screws in the back and attached velcro to the game pad and the back of my expansion pack so I could use them at the same time, it works like a charm.

Tough one to answer. I heard some folks set the Action key to jump and the fire key to left and right. This makes him run left and fire and allows the action key to work as jump simultaneously with the left or right directional.
Or buy a Qpad.
