Hi, I have a Dell Axim X5 - 400MHz and installed MegaMameCE and am able to play most games well but is there any way to actually play with sound turned on or does it just draw too much memory and processing power? The games will run but slow to a complete crawl.

Sound definitely slows the Emulator down. Some games run 'acceptable' with sound enabled.
Its trail and error. Sound is also the weakest part of the emulator. ;)
