I'm looking to get a Dell or HP handheld - and i think i'm going to mostly base it on which one can run MAME CE best! Does anyone have a preferance?
Also, I have MAME .74 on my machine with about 1000 roms. Is there anyway i can convert these roms to ver.36 to work with this emulator? Thanks!

Well there is a current Dell vs Asus battle going on ! The benchmarks i've seen put the Asus MyPal 620 as the fastest so thats what i bought.

However the Dell is a very good machine and is cheaper but to me speed was #1. I've got the Asus and i can now run Mame games full speed, SNES games full speed with sound, Genesis and GBA games mostly full speed (some are still a bit too slow)

With a 512 MB CF card i have a ton of games on it and the MyPal is superb.

Unsure about how to convert the roms though. Anyway i'm pleased as anything with the Asus and the controls are very good

The free GBA emulator can be found on this link http://www.pocketgamer.org/games/emulators/index.shtml but the GBA module on Morphgear is very good but costs money to buy the working module.

Not all GBA games run full speed. Thankfully for me Mario Kart Advanced does with sound, Mario Land Advance is a fraction too slow but i play the SNES version which is 100% the same anyway. I completed Wariowear recently BUT the latest GBA games sound doesnt seem to work properly on the GBA emulators because of different channels or something like that.

I play a fair few GBA games, just completed Baldurs Gate: Dark Alliance which was superb but again without sound on the PPC.

The Asus is fast enough to play most GBA games but again the later games have sound issues. You'll also be impressed by all the other emulators. If you have the money Morphgear is a fine program with a ton of different emulators.

The Dell x3 i think it is is cheaper than the Asus but the Asus still is faster and you dont need to overclock it. Let me know how you get on

Thanks for all the helpful info! I'm suprized that it's hard to find good side-by-side comparisons of all the different PDA's out there, and that benchmark test link was just what i was looking for!

I mainly play Bombjack, just played it with sound and it ran 100%, the sound sounded a bit weird and crackly but that could be because my Asus ROM isnt the latest one.

Tried PacMan plus and the only sound i had was the theme tune when i started, again sounded a bit unclear. Arkanoid the music was again a bit unclear but the sound effects hitting the bricks etc was alright.

I must admit i dont always put the sound on on these Mame games. The ones i tried run 100% but like i say the sounds a bit off but that could be because i dont have the latest rom (Cant be bothered to get the latest one as i dont want to wipe out whats on my PPC)

The amount of potential games you can get if you get an Asus (Eg GBA, Genesis, SNES, PC Engine, Mame) etc is just incredible

The sound problem is not related to your device. Its the weakest part of the emulator at the moment.
As usual, its on the agenda to work on :)

Seeing most games run 60fps full speed on my A620, it would be sweet to have the sound fixed up a bit now that PPC's can do MAME some justice (for early-mid 80's stuff at least).

Yep, spare time is hard to come by right now but I do find a few minutes every now and then. Hard to accomplish much in such little windows tho.

The A620 sounds like a sweet device. Maybe I can get one for Xmas this year(if the Easter bunny leaves me a job first :) ).

I may try for a maintenance release that allows for using just the new roms, but so much of the MAME Core has changed that its difficult to section out such specifics in all those major changes. Sound fixes will definitely have to be part of the next major release. :)
