I've got a MIPs based handheld. I've got the MIPS version of MAMECE3. I've got two questions:

1) Can I put the program and the ROMS on the Storage Card? I've only seen references to the ROMS on the Storage Card and MAMECE3 in program memory.

2) I've put GX.DLL in the \windows directory but when I run MAMECE3 I get an error that says I'm missing some components. Are there any other required programs? This is an ePods CE machine and it might be missing some basic programs that would normally be installed on a CE machine.

I'm not familiar with that device. Could you tell me a little more about it?
What version of CE does it have? (2.0, 2.11, 3.0/PocketPC etc)
What resolution is the display?

MAMECE3 is intended to run on "Palmsized" (i.e. 240x320) PocketPC (i.e. CE3.0) units.

It is running CE 2.12 see www.geocities.com/epodsfiles It is a tablet with 640 x 480 screen and a stylus. It is supposed to be used with the www.epods.com ISP service but they went bankrupt. It has a MIPS processor, 16mb RAM, 16mb ROM and a 8mb flash. I've added an additional 32mb CF.

I've gotten it to run some CE software. DOOMCE is supposed to work so I thought I'd give MAMECE a try.

Are you *sure* it's CE2.12? (Start|Settings|System) I've never heard of 2.12, only 2.11. Mine Casio E-100 says "Version 2.11 (Build 9015)" what does the ePod say?

In any case, I don't think you'll have any luck getting MAMECE3 to run on it, as it is for CE3.0. Your best bet would likely be the original MAMECE here: http://www.vintagegaming.com/hosted/mamece/
However, I'm still doubtful it will work. You see, MAMECE tries to use method of direct access to the video memory (because it's much faster) however, not all devices are capable of this DSA. In addition, quite a few things in MAMECE (esp in my E-100 build :) are 'hard-coded' for 240x320 screens.

The degree of sucess you have using any given CE app on your device depends largely on how much effort the developer spent to 'generalize' his app to run on varied hardware. Also, any program which uses GameX (the CE2.11 predecessor of the CE3.0 GAPI) is unlikely to work on it.

That said; I would guess it is possible to get MAME running on an ePod, but I'd say it will take someone compiling a version specificially for it. And, if it is to play at an acceptable speed, figure out how to directly access the video memory.

It is definately 2.12. I know it is pretty odd but that's it. I guess I'll have to pass on MAME. I thought it might have been worth a try. I did get DOOMCE to work, so at least that's something.
